Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Psychology in Healthcare Department based at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We are a supportive and dynamic department of psychologists who provide psychological and neuropsychological services to patients with a broad range of health conditions across the lifespan.
This is a community-based post to provide psychological and neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation to patients in the Newcastle Community Stroke Service. The Newcastle Community Stroke Service offers specialist rehabilitation to adults who have a Newcastle GP and a diagnosis of stroke.
The post sits within the Neuropsychology team, which is part of the Psychology in Healthcare Department.

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and supportive MDT working in the community stroke team and will also be an active member of the NuTH neuropsychology team. This is an exciting and varied role which will include psychological therapy, consultation, neuropsychological assessment and rehab for people who have had a stroke. The post involves using specialist psychological and neuropsychological experience, skills and knowledge in stroke care within a community setting, focusing on rehabilitation, patient and family support, and service development. This includes ensuring the delivery of person-centered and evidence-based care, promoting psychological and neuropsychological knowledge in the community team through training and consultation and contributing to service improvements.
Regular supervision from qualified clinical and neuropsychology colleagues will be provided and there will be opportunities for CPD related to the role and the development needs of the post holder.
We welcome applications from candidates who are interested in working with patients recovering from stroke and have experience in working with adults with neurological and/or other health conditions. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Patient and Family Support:
Providing holistic support to stroke patients and their families, including emotional support, practical advice, and guidance on self-management strategies. Group work. Ensuring the delivery of high-quality, best practice, and evidence-based care to stroke patients and their families, adhering to national stroke standards and best practices. - Rehabilitation and Therapy:
Facilitating and coordinating stroke rehabilitation, promoting psychological and neuropsychological functioning and recovery, and maximizing independence in the community setting and contributing to vocational rehab for those wishing to return to work. - Service Development and Improvement:
Contributing to the development and implementation of service improvements, participating in audits and service reviews, and responding to national initiatives related to stroke care. - Inter-professional Collaboration:
Working effectively with other healthcare professionals, including therapists, social workers, nurses, doctors and community services, to ensure a coordinated and integrated approach to patient care. - Pathway Management:
Alongside psychology management, coordinating the patient pathway for psychological care, from initial assessment to discharge, ensuring smooth transitions and optimal outcomes. - Supervision, Education and Training:
Providing regular supervision to doctoral trainees on placement. Providing education and training to other healthcare professionals and staff on psychological and neuropsychological aspects of stroke care and rehabilitation. - Communication and Advocacy:
Effectively communicating with patients, families, and other stakeholders, advocating for the needs of stroke patients and their families.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- Doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society
- Registered with HCPC
Desirable criteria
- Engagement with the Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology and/or further training in specialist therapeutic interventions relevant to the post
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial experience in providing a neuropsychology and/or clinical health psychology service to patients presenting to neurological services and willingness to develop skills working with patients with stroke
- Experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity and with experience of working as a qualified psychologist in a health care setting
- Doctorate level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology
- Further training in supervision skills required to provide supervision for Doctoral trainees
- In addition to obtaining the necessary qualifications and experience to practice as a clinical psychologist, has additional knowledge of working as a clinical psychologist in Health services and/or neuropsychological services
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of working as a psychologist in a neuropsychological or health psychology setting
- Clinical experience of working with people with neurological disorders
- Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
- Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts
