At East Surrey Hospital, Redhill we have 697 beds and provide acute and complex services. In addition, we provide a range of outpatient, diagnostic and less complex planned services at The Earlswood Centre, Caterham Dene Hospital and Oxted Health Centre in Surrey, and at Crawley and Horsham Hospitals in West Sussex.

The in hospital pain service(IHPS) supports patients with specific pain management needs(E.g. acute on chronic pain, complex patients with multiple sensitivities to analgesics or patients on high doses of opioids, enhanced recovery ) By delivering high quality , safe, patient focused care through a multimodal and multidisciplinary team approach. The majority patient group are those who have undergone surgery with moderate to severe acute post- op pain ( e.g. major abdominal surgery and joint replacement surgery) Some patients requiring care maybe referred via other pathways ( Medical, neurological, neuro surgical specialists) The service is delivered in a variety of in hospital setting including PACU, Ward Areas and ED.
The post holder will
§ be responsible for the provision of high quality, individualised care to patients/clients requiring specific pain management support
§ provide specialist practice advice, skills and appropriate information, which supports and facilitates the delivery of excellent, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers.
§ support the development of acute post-operative pain management guidelines
§ lead and deliver on-going education to nursing and clinical staff
§ be responsible for acting in such a manner, as to uphold and enhance the good standard and reputation of the Trust and contribute to meeting Trust organisational objectives

Main duties and key responsibilities
Communications and Relationships.
· Liaises with members of the multidisciplinary team both within the organization and with external stake holders, to ensure care is delivered to the patient both effectively and efficiently, maintaining continuity of care
· Communicates proactively with IHPS staff, ward staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate, on the clinical condition, treatment and discharge plans of the patient, ensuring accurate, contemporaneous, nursing records are maintained.
· Actively involves others in communication between patients, relatives and multi professional team both within the organization and with external stake holders to avoid problems caused by poor communication
· Leads and supports all professionals in coordinating patient care plans for patients under the care of the IHPS and ensures verbal and non-verbal communication is maintained for patients, relatives and carers.
- Ensures that communications are timely, concise, and unambiguous, in a manner and pace appropriate to the understanding of professional colleagues, patients and others.
· Actively involves patients and their carers, in their treatment and encourages others to enable individuals to assist in their own recovery
· Ensure systems are in place to proactively disseminate information eg team meetings, news letters
· Acts as an ambassador/role model for the organization and the nursing profession.
Analytical and Judgement
· Maintains the co-ordination of the multi-disciplinary team, in the care of patients under the care of the IHPS
· Lads clinical care, demonstrating assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, utilising research findings as appropriate.
· Maintains awareness of relevant clinical developments and national recommendations within pain management
· Lead and support regular ward rounds for patient’s under the care of IHPS
· Leads others in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care in accordance with trust and departmental protocols.
· Represents team and organisation at professional meetings as requested and feeds back information appropriately.
- Assist in the clinical preparation and delivery of specific pain management interventions
Planning and Organising
§ Deliver an effective duty roster to ensure consistent nursing support as per service needs
§ Demonstrate pro-active leadership to ensure patients, visitors and staff safety.
§ Participate fully as a team member, including sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, to promote a cohesive approach to multi-disciplinary working and service delivery.
§ Responsible for promoting the role of the IHPS, within and outside of the Trust and ensuring development of the service in line with best practice
§ Demonstrate critical thinking skills regarding developments in patient care
§ Adhere to the procedures for the use of supplies, ordering of stock and non-stock items, in-line with budgetary guidelines
§ Ensure the accurate collection of data in relation to IHPS activity and actively participate in the Trust audit programme, delivering feedback in line with divisional governance requirements
§ The post holder will be appraised on an annual basis and the process will include a review of the past year’s performance, setting of aims and objectives for the coming year and identification of education needs.
§ Undertake appraisal of staff in line with Trust guidelines.
§ Carry out clinical and environmental risk assessments as required
Education
§ Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive environment for colleagues, patients/clients and visitors.
§ Act as a facilitator/mentor to designated newly qualified practitioners, students or others, within the clinical environment.
§ Develops and participates in the delivery of educational programmes to support safe nursing care of patients requiring pain management
§ Deliver clinical teaching to support the learning needs of other clinical teams
- In addition to clinical duties, the direct supervision and training of junior staff will be their responsibility.
Policy & Service Development
Implements policies for own work area and proposes policy or service changes which impact beyond own area of activity.
Responsibility for Patient Care
§ Contributes to the development of patient care pathways, within the IHPS
§ Liaises with nursing and clinical leads to bring to their attention any problems identified.
§ Ensures the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of patient’s, relatives and colleagues is respected at all times.
§ Actively investigates complaints and drafts responses as required.
§ Is customer aware and deals at all-times appropriately i.e. professionally and politely with all customers whether patient’s, relatives, carers, other members of staff or the general public.
Finance and Physical Resources
§ Responsible for the safe use of equipment and reporting maintenance requirements.
§ Responsible for reporting low levels of stock and equipment.
§ Contributes to maintaining security within the department.
§ Responsible for handling patient’s valuables adhering to trust policy.
§ Responsible for maintaining service provision within agreed staffing establishments
Managing Human Resources
§ Supports the education and development of all staff including pre and post registration students. Leads in education and training programmes.
§ Promotes the principles of improving working lives amongst the team, ensuring fairness and equality.
· Maintain, update and develop personal and professional knowledge and skills, using the Trust’s Performance Review System
Research and Development.
· Leads nursing audit relevant to IHPS
· Participates in and supports clinical audit
· Critically evaluates and facilitates evidenced based practice, in pain management
· Collects, collates and reports information as required.
· Assists in preparation for any external audits or inspections e.g. CQC
The trust manages all research in accordance with the research governance framework, of which a copy is available in the medical director’s office. As an employee of the trust you are required to comply with all reporting requirements, systems and duties of action put in place by the trust to deliver research governance standards.

· Ensures own and others practice is in line with NMC code of professional conduct at all times, and systems are in place to ensure staff have current live registration
· Ensures own and others professional /educational /training needs are identified in order to maintain clinical and professional credibility.

· To ensure a link system for particular areas of practice are in place and that information/development are fed back to the team to ensure evidence based care and practice across the organization

§ Able to perform effectively when dealing with frequent and unpredictable interruptions/requests/problems concerning patients, staff and visitors.
