An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Radiographer to lead our team in our UKAS, QSI accredited General X-Ray Department.
We are a busy department, with an acute site at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and several community sites located throughout Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre.

The post holder will be responsible for the management of the Radiography services across the Trust. Managerially and professionally reporting to the Radiology Directorate Manager. The post holder will be responsible for developing quality Radiography services that are efficient, responsive, and meet the requirements of the organisation and the wider community. To engage with Trust-wide Radiologists and Radiographers, driving improvement and efficient working practices using evidence-based protocols and procedures. The post holder will also be responsible for ensuring that the available capacity of the general radiography service, Trust-wide, is sufficient to meet the needs of the Trust and our stakeholders. The post holder will be responsible for addressing general radiography capacity issues, Trust-wide, in collaboration with the Radiology Head of Profession & Radiology Business Manager
The post holder will be responsible for Image and Service Quality across the Directorate, establishing protocols and methods of measuring and maintaining service quality.

Clinical
- To ensure standardised imaging protocols are implemented and utilised across the Radiography service of the BTHT.
- Ensure that the vetting service and in situ staff can match the clinical indications presented by the referrer to a departmental protocol, where appropriate.
- Possess a good theoretical and practical knowledge of radiographic technique to ensure that image quality, patient comfort and patient safety are maintained at all times.
- Ensure that all staff, where imaging reveals a pathology which requires urgent medical review of the patient, brings such findings to the attention of a reporter. In the absence of a reporter, notify the referring clinician of the scan findings, in line with departmental policies.
- Ensure that all images are presented for reporting purposes in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Participate in and occasionally chair radiology meetings, as required.

General
- Create, maintain, and enhance working relationships with wards, clinicians, and staff.
- Work closely with specialist groups to ensure that they operate in a safe manner in the controlled area.
- Ensure that emergency drugs and equipment are in date and in full working order and where necessary authorise repairs or replacement products.
- Supervise and delegate duties to radiographic assistants, junior staff, students, and porters.
- Give assurance that there is the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the department and hospital, using manual handling guidelines and risk assessments.
- Keep equipment, work areas and accessories clean and tidy. Be aware of all procedures to promote infection control and reduce cross infection.
- To ensure that there is accurate patient and examination data into the Radiology Information System (RIS) and scanner consoles ensuring patient confidentiality and complying with the DPA.
- Responsible for devising a development and performance plan for the radiography team, integrating the requirements of standards for better health and risk management.
- In association with the senior team members, be responsible for identifying areas of concern within the radiography team and developing new service models which are clinically sound.
- Undertake audit and maintain records relating to image quality, as well as supervising and teaching students and qualified staff, within radiography.
- To ensure establishment and compliance with Trust wide equipment Quality Assurance programme in conjunction with Christies Medical Physics and Engineering.
- To delegate appropriate tasks to manage quality assurance as determined by the BTH IRMER group, via the Radiation Protection Supervisors in the team. Providing reports for the annual radiation meeting and reporting incidents and concerns with the support of the RPA.
- Ensure radiography is working in line with IRR17) and IR(ME)R17, with the support of CMPE and the RPA.
- To be responsible for the equipment in the radiography area and the safe use, maintenance, monitoring and review of suitability. To be involved in the replacement of equipment and the selection of new machines.
COMMUNICATION
- Liaise with referral source where clarification is required regarding the selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging examination.
- Act as a professional resource regarding imaging procedures for other department staff and clinical colleagues.
- To ensure the senior radiographic team have the skills to assess specific communication needs of individual patients.
- Provide information by explanation and demonstration of often-complex procedures and listening to the patient’s requirements in order to encourage compliance with the imaging process.
- Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts.
- Liaise with other departments within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians.
- To report clinical, non-clinical and radiation incidents in line with Trust and departmental risk management policies.
- To liaise with the senior radiographers, with regard to staffing, rotas etc. ensuring services are supported and can be delivered in a safe working environment.
- To liaise regularly with the Consultant Radiologists with regard to the development of new protocols, ensuring new radiographic developments are evidence based and meet the requirements of the directorate and the wider organisation.
TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT
To be active in the supervision and clinical instruction of both undergraduate and postgraduate senior and junior radiographic staff.
- To participate in the academic programme of the department as required.
- To prepare/present short presentations or lectures for staff and participate in CPD.
- To actively participate in the directorate's audit programme.
- To evaluate technology and its clinical application.
- To provide training in the use of clinical equipment for other staff and monitor their progression and performance. Advise on appropriate record keeping.
- To provide elements of induction training and support for other staff.
- To monitor compliance with Trust requirements for the undertaking and completion of annual appraisals for all departmental staff.
- To undertake personal mandatory training in accordance with trust policy and terms and conditions of employment.
- Attend an annual appraisal with appointed reviewer.
ORGANISATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Managerially responsible for the Advanced Practice radiographers in various specialities within radiography, ensuring services are developed based on evidence-based practice and with sound qualitative and governance structures.
- To lead and manage the plain film, fluoroscopy, mammography, and interventional radiography service across the Trust, ensuring all working practices, protocols and procedures are standardised across the trust and are evidence based. To be responsible for the symptomatic breast imaging service and team.
- To assume direct responsibility for operational management of the plain film (projectional) and interventional imaging and fluoroscopy on the base site and any satellite site as delegated by the Radiology Directorate Manager.
- Engage and work closely with the Radiology Administration Manager to ensure efficient processes are observed at all times in order to maximise equipment usage, for booked radiography.
- Lead manager responsible for assessing the capacity of Radiography across the trust, increasing service levels as and when required without resorting to payment of overtime.
- Ensure preparation and subsequent observation of contingency plans for planned and non-planned equipment downtime.
- Take delegated budgetary responsibility for the radiographic areas of responsibility and the establishment within them.
- Responsible manager for the procurement of contrast media specific to relevant radiographic procedures seeking cost efficiency saving when and where appropriate.
- To develop, in association with the Radiology Clinical Tutor, a comprehensive competence framework for radiographers, assistant practitioners and radiography assistants. This framework will support the training and development plan for radiographers trust wide, ensuring all radiographers are mentored and supported and are able to demonstrate the designated skills and techniques at the competency level required.
- To take the lead role in partnership with the Directorate Manager and Procurement, in the purchase of new x-ray equipment or associated accessories.
- To attend equipment demonstrations on and off site as part of a selection process for purchasing new equipment and provide appropriate feedback to the Radiology Directorate Manager.
- To provide advice and support to the clinical team responsible for radiography rosters and staffing when staffing difficulties arise, utilising knowledge of the skills available trust wide.
- Responsible for the radiographic recruitment process.
- In association with the Radiology Directorate Manager and HR advisory service, manage and lead on issues in relation to capability, discipline, and conduct, particularly if the issues are clinical.
- Line manager for all Radiographer, Assistant Practitioners, Radiographic Assistants and Support Workers in the plain film/interventional/mammography imaging department.
- To deputise for other managers and radiographic team members in cases of absence, planned or otherwise to ensure service continuity.
- To ensure timely submission of performance reports as required by the Radiology Directorate Manager.
- To ensure appropriate awareness of examinations for reporting, to raise concern about appropriate turnaround time by regularly consulting the unreported report, with particular regard to radiographer reporting and plain film reporting.
- To monitor appropriate use of RIS and PACS to ensure images and examinations are presented correctly for reporting in a timely manner. To review all areas of the radiographic work to ensure that all aspects of RIS completion are compliant and to provide feedback and learning when needed as to the impact of error.
- To attend all directorate meetings as requested or delegate attendance for occasions of absence.
- To deal with and respond to complaints as delegated, in an appropriate and timely manner, providing feedback to staff where appropriate.
- Ensure observation of preventative maintenance schedules for all equipment.
- Advantageous to be trained as a Radiation Protection Supervisor.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITES
- Ensure compliance with requirement to renew Professional Registration
- Uphold Professional Conduct at all times in accordance with Society of Radiographer (SOR) Statements for Professional Conduct and Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency for Radiographers.
- Undertake appropriate, documented Continuing Professional Development in accordance with the requirements of the HCPC.
