Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 2, Special Feeds Unit Milk Technician, to work under strict instruction from our Paediatric Dietitians for our children in Rose ward, PHDU (Paediatric High Dependency) and PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit).
We are looking for a dynamic individual who has the enthusiasm for working within a team to support the wider inpatient area. Candidates must have a reliable work record and the desire to learn and further develop their skills. You will need to be self-motivated, good IT skills.
You will be required to pay great attention to detail and have the ability to work under pressure providing high standards of care. You must have great communication skills, be punctual, have a smart appearance, be professional and polite.

Job main duties:

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities
- To work in the SFU under the supervision and instruction of the SFU manager and Dietitians.
- To follow detailed policies and procedures for the preparation of special feeds.
- To undertake a training schedule to achieve competence in all areas of the diet service following the written instructions of the dietitian.
- To make special formulas to a high degree of accuracy, according dietitian prescription (in the EDM 3000), print out the checklist and load prepared feeds onto the delivery trolleys against the checklist.
- To be responsible for the safe use of equipment in the SFU e.g. electronic scales, dishwashers, blast chiller.
- Daily temperature record of the fridges, the freezers, and the Blast chiller.
- To be actively responsible for the stock feeds and equipment in the SFU and Level 4 Milk Kitchen.
- To help with incoming deliveries of orders and ensure correct storage, stock control and rotation and report any shortages to the manager/dietitian/ Paediatric Clinical Assistant Practitioner.
- To follow relevant policies and procedures to unsure safe preparation of 24-hour batches of specialist powder formulas and feeds.
- To provide information to ward staff over the telephone and face to face regarding queries about SFU procedures.
- To liaise with other hospital departments to ensure the smooth running of the SFU e.g. works department and supplies department.
- To have a polite and helpful manner when dealing with members of the public and hospital staff who use our services.
- To assist with daily cleaning duties.
- To report any hazards in respect of the Health and Safety at Work policy to your manager or ward sister.
- To demonstrate any aspect of duties and responsibilities to new staff and be involved in training new staff, as directed by the SFU Manager.
- To perform any other reasonable duties as requested by the SFU Manager.
- To undertake an annual appraisal and complete an annual Personal Development Plan.
