Job overview
The Named Nurse for Children in Care (CIC) will provide expert clinical, strategic and operational leadership across Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to ensure the health needs of Children in Care are met in line with statutory requirements and national guidance.
This role is critical in ensuring the Trust provides safe, high-quality, trauma-informed care to vulnerable children and young people, and it involves working in collaboration with Local Authorities, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), Designated Professionals, CAMHS, and other key stakeholders.

Leadership and Strategic Development
- Provide Trust-wide leadership on all aspects of health provision for Children in Care (CIC).
- Lead on the development, implementation and evaluation of the Trust’s strategy for Children in Care, in line with national guidance.
- Support compliance with statutory responsibilities (Children Act 1989/2004, Working Together 2023, Promoting the Health of LAC 2015).
Clinical and Professional Expertise
- Act as the expert practitioner for Children in Care.
- Provide clinical supervision and professional leadership to staff delivering CIC services.
- Ensure robust systems are in place to oversee quality and timeliness of Initial and Review Health Assessments (IHAs and RHAs).
Quality Assurance and Governance
- Lead quality improvement and clinical audit processes related to CIC.
- Provide data, reports and updates to internal and external stakeholders, including commissioners and regulatory bodies.
Training and Workforce Development
- Identify training needs and develop resources and programmes to improve staff understanding of CIC needs.
- Contribute to the development of workforce capacity and competence in line with national frameworks.
Partnership and Representation
Represent the Trust at local and regional multi-agency Children in Care boards and networks.
- Foster collaborative working with Local Authorities, education, police, and third sector organisations.

You can choose whether to pay this over 1-3 months from your salary or as a one-off payment on commencement in post. The level of check required depends on the role that you have been offered. Currently the charges are - Basic DBS check £25.50, Standard DBS check £25.50 and Enhanced DBS check £53.50.
You are encouraged where possible, to register for the DBS update service. This is an annual registration fee of £16. By registering for the update service you will not have the additional cost of repeated disclosures.
Should you withdraw your application, you may be required to reimburse the cost of the DBS check.

Essential criteria
- RGN, RMN or RMCN
- Teaching/Training qualification or experience as a trainer.
- Evidence of initiative-taking personal and professional development.
- Leadership qualification or experience within a leadership role.
- Educated to degree level
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE
Essential criteria
- Have substantial safeguarding and Children in Care experience at Band 7 or above.
- • Experience working with children, young people who are vulnerable and have complex safeguarding concerns.
- • Experience of dealing with safeguarding children’s incidents.
- Ability to work independently, but also a collaborator, able to contribute to the wider mission of the organisation.
• SKILLS AND ABILITY
Desirable criteria
- • Excellent written, IT and communication skills, including report writing, presentations and use of Microsoft IT packages (Excel / PowerPoint / Word etc.).
- • The ability to lead a team motivates and empowers team members.
- • Effective interpersonal and influencing skills include being able to communicate effectively across all disciplines and partner agencies.
- • Good understanding of the NHS, social care and police including the political, strategic, and operational environment in which it operates.
