Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

The post holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of glaucoma research services to the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

The main role of the post holder will be to undertake glaucoma research relating to new glaucoma treatment and aqueous dynamics. The position holder will undertake clinical examinations and study recruitment. The role will involve using a range of traditional and the latest devices available on the market. The post will be under the direct supervision of Professor Lim.

The King’s College London Frost Eye Research Unit runs alongside the ophthalmology service at St Thomas’ hospital. Our department has a proven track record of nationally and internationally recognised research focusing on the cause and treatment of eye disease, alongside clinical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment in all sub-specialities of Ophthalmology.
Glaucoma research, in particular, forms the main focus of this department. We are the only centre in Europe with an active aqueous dynamic lab. We are the leading recruiting centre for many landmark glaucoma studies.
The department has delivered successfully on a number of both commercial and non-commercial portfolio studies and plays a key role in driving and supporting continued recruitment within the NIHR Clinical Research Network South London.

Duties and responsibilities:
Clinical:
The post holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of glaucoma research services to the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to include:
a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.
c) Have demonstrated commitment to a career in glaucoma
d) Lead and provide clinical supports to glaucoma research projects including commercial trials
e) Support the provision of the glaucoma service including clinics, ward & theatres
f) Contribute to the development overall of the research department & ophthalmology service
g) Participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care
h) Work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure the high performance in outpatients.
i) Prepare scientific/research data to be presented at internal and external meetings in relation to the programme of research where relevant
j) Prepare, or contribution to the preparation of, manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
Training of junior staff:
The postholder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that postholder has agreed with their supervising consultant.
Teaching:
The postholder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Clinical Governance:
All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.
