Job overview
This role is offered on a permanent basis. The hours are part-time, 22.5 hours per week.
We are seeking to recruit a Band 4 Support Time & Recovery Worker within the Gloucestershire Criminal Justice Liaison & Diversion Service, based at the Montpellier Unit at Wotton Lawn in Gloucester. This is an exciting opportunity to join our long established team covering all areas of the Criminal Justice Services in Gloucestershire.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to support the team and develop the service to meet the Specification laid out by NHS England.
The service runs a 7 day embedded service in Police Custody, as well as to a busy Magistrates Court. The post holder will support prisoners being released into the local community from prisons located in England under the NHS England RECONNECT Strategy.
You will help develop links with other agencies both public sector and independent in ensuring the clients seen receive the best possible service.
You will need to
- Have experience or knowledge of working with individuals who have been in contact with the criminal justice system
- Ideally will have experience within Adult Mental Health, Substance Misuse or Alcohol Services, Housing and Benefits Agency
- Be willing to work within a challenging environment, and work with multiple criminal justice agencies
- Be part of a team working to improve the experience of service users who may be presenting with health inequalities and vulnerabilities

Support Time & Recovery Workers are a key part of the Liaison and Diversion process.
Their role is to engage with clients and in doing so, build a trusting relationship to improve engagement and to gain an understanding of their health and social care needs.
Your role will involve:
- Assisting service users to access services to address health vulnerabilities leading improvements in their health and wellbeing.
- Provide help and advice on housing, drug and alcohol support and education, debt management, employment issues and access to Primary Care.
- You will manage a caseload of clients, supporting and encouraging their engagement with services.
- You will develop links with other agencies to enable improved, supported access to services.
- You will work in a variety of different settings which will include custody suite, court, prisons and other locations in the community.
- Part of the role will also include supporting individuals leaving prison and assist their integration back into the community.
The candidate will be required to undergo successful police vetting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To work alongside other members of the Criminal Justice Liaison Service (CJLS), with an allocated number of individual service users who have been in contact with the Criminal Justice System (CJS). The post holder with also be required to attend and actively participate in team meetings, training sessions, team and care plan review meetings and supervision as appropriate.
- Ensure that the Data has been accurately recorded by the senior clinicians and ensure that the data set is completed and sent to NHS England each month.
- To attend police custody suites and magistrates’ courts to contribute to mental health assessments, advice, and the delivery of care pathways, for individuals where a potential mental health or other vulnerability has been identified.
- To work with and maintain appropriate engagement for a time limited period, with offenders with mental health problems and other vulnerabilities who are likely to have multiple and complex needs
- To liaise with and assist the Criminal Justice Mental Health practitioners, along with an extensive number of external agencies, with the assessment and short term care planning for service users.
· To network with a wide range of health and social care agencies, to identify and develop a database of local resources, and to understand the impact of stigma that offenders with mental health problems often face in accessing these services.
· To communicate often complex, sensitive and, at times contentious information, where skills of persuasive motivational negotiating, empathy and counselling are required, often in situations where there are barriers to understanding and high stress levels, e.g. Court rooms and Police Custody settings.
- To positively promote independent living of services users within the community. To develop a rapport with service users within appropriate and transparent boundaries.
- Provide regular and practical support to service users and their carers in developing and managing dignity and independence.
- Provide support with daily living by agreeing a support action plan with service users and their appropriate care team.
- Provide information on health promotion, including alcohol brief interventions.
- Help to identify early signs of relapse by reviewing the client’s progress against the support action plan, and alert the appropriate staff involved in the client’s care.
- To maintain adequate records as required by existing procedures, entering appropriate details on the service user’s electronic health records .as necessary.
- Actively promote the rights and responsibilities of service users, engendering empowerment and wellbeing.
- Maintain personal safety and to comply with the Trust’s one working policy.
- Maintain effective time management tools when taking responsibility for a caseload of service users.
- Provide information to the Criminal Justice Mental Health practitioners in order to contribute to audits and monitoring reports.
- Participate in the review and evaluation of the service provided to clients by the ST&R Court Assessment and Advice Service.
- To comply with Trust policies and procedures.
- To undertake such other duties as may be determined from time to time within the general scope of the post.
