An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Electro-Medical Engineer to join a busy EME Services team maintaining the medical equipment spread across various sites of the Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. The successful applicant will be based at East Surrey Hospital working Trust wide as required.
Ideally, you will have a minimum of HNC/HND or equivalent in an Electrical / Electronic Engineering discipline with experience working in the electronic/electrical-mechanical field preferably workshop based. Prior knowledge of medical devices/medical engineering is essential.
Duties are to provide a complete medical equipment management service including acceptance testing, planned preventative maintenance, calibration and equipment repair. Good workshop skills including fault finding and corrective maintenance skills are imperative.
You must be self-motivated with a flexible approach, have the confidence to work alone and contribute when working with others.
You must have excellent communication and IT skills, be well organised and have the ability to develop effective working relationships with suppliers and Trust staff at all levels.
High standards of safety and accountability will be expected.

The EME Services Teams main duties will be for inspecting, maintaining and repairing a wide range of medical, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment across the Trust to ensure the safe, effective and economic operation of such equipment. The clinical equipment covered by EME Services incorporates components of electrical, electronic, mechanical, computer software and medical gases.
The post-holder will have the relevant professional experience and the technical qualifications to work on his/her own initiative on critical clinical equipment in a sensitive environment.
The post-holder will have the communication skills to be able to liaise with clinical and technical colleagues, equipment manufacturers and suppliers.

Clinical / Technical
1.1 To provide clinical technical support in all aspects relating to the preventative maintenance, inspection, repair and calibration of a wide range of patient-critical medical equipment in a safe and professional manner in accordance with departmental procedures, Trust policies, statutory regulations and the MHRA’s Managing Medical Devices January 2021 edition.
• Effective fault finding involving complex communication with clinical users to gain a clear understanding of the nature of problems with equipment.
• Assess the seriousness of the problem and respond appropriately with the correct level of urgency.
• Undertake fault finding utilising the advanced test equipment and equipment analysers available. Apply suitable fault finding techniques to diagnose problems.
• Exercise judgement to determine the causes of faults in devices with multiple complex and inter-related systems (eg electrical, electronic, software, gas systems and mechanical systems) which may be due to user error, equipment failure or environmental conditions (eg temperature, RF interference).
• Carry out repairs on complex equipment down to assembly / board level.
• Carry out equipment performance checks to manufacturer’s specification including electrical safety testing.
• Bring to the attention of the whole department, and manufacturer if necessary, any untoward fault conditions.
1.2 Acceptance test new medical equipment in accordance with MHRA documentation.
1.3 Respond to emergency calls as a priority.
1.4 Liaise with clinical staff to establish agreed configuration settings for the medical equipment requiring it.
1.5 Liaise with manufacturers to obtain information and provide feedback on equipment performance.
1.6 Monitor stocks of appropriate components and spares, re-ordering where necessary obtaining best value for the Trust.
1.7 Take responsibility for all tools and equipment within the Post-holder’s care. Ensure workshop facilities are kept clear and well-ordered and that all equipment is maintained and calibrated to acceptable standards. Where EME equipment is passed to others to use, make sure they are authorised to use it in a safe and effective manner.
1.8 Participate in the operation of a Planned Preventative Maintenance (P.P.M) System for designated Electro-Medical Devices.
1.9 Liaise with clinical staff to organise PPM schedules. Adjust schedules in response to short-term or urgent clinical needs.
1.10 Ensure all work carried out is correctly recorded on the EME Services electronic asset management system. Ensure all records are accurate and stated in a logical, methodical manner as the work progresses.
1.11 Using technical and clinical experience, identify potentially hazardous situations and faults when in clinical areas or in talking to clinical staff and make known to senior team members.
1.12 To participate in an EME emergency 24 hour on-call rota of one week’s duration at a time.
1.13 Work closely with technical and clinical staff to provide high standards of service delivery, making continual improvements in the management of medical devices across the Trust as directed by the EME Manager.
1.14 Work at all times in accordance with the Trust’s policies on Health and Safety and Medical Device Management.
1.15 Should be conversant with MHRA document Managing Medical Devices.
1.16 Should be conversant with ‘The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989’ and ‘The Health and Safety at Work Act’. The post-holder must be aware of their responsibilities under these two acts to ensure a safe working environment for patients, visitors and colleagues.
2 Professional
2.1 Seek to gain the experience and qualifications to obtain the status of Clinical Technologist (or at least an equal position within another professional body) under the Health Professions Council.
2.2 Prioritise and manage own work in accordance with departmental procedures and competing service demands.
2.3 Keep abreast of technical developments. Making clinical staff aware of new innovations and improved software upgrades of existing equipment.
2.4 Carry out all activities to the high standard expected of a Medical Engineering Professional.
2.5 Be able to demonstrate an understanding of hazards posed by, and precautions needed within the workshop.
3 Teaching / Training
3.1 Assist as required in the instruction of user staff (doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, technical teams etc.), on a one to one basis, in procedures for the safe operation and care of new and existing equipment.
3.2 Participate in any PC software course run by the Trust for any software that is used within the department.
3.3 Attend manufacturers and specialist training courses as required.
3.4 Take part in the Trust Achievement Review to identify personal and professional development.
3.5 It is the post-holders duty to ensure they maintain an ‘in-date’ certificate on all Trust mandatory courses (relevant to the position). Enrol and attend training courses they have ‘time expired’ on.
• Train other EME technicians in any techniques learned through manufacturer’s courses or specialist training.
• Train new EME technicians in department procedures.
3.6 Bring to the manager’s attention any course or training that will enhance the service provided by EME.
4 Key attitudes and behaviours:
4.1 The EME Service works to an accredited quality system. The post-holder is to ensure compliance with this system within their area of responsibility.
4.2 Work outside normal core working hours on occasion (this requirement will only be when deemed necessary by the EME Manager).
4.3 Participate in regular meetings with the EME Manager and fellow
staff and act on any decisions made at those meetings.
4.4 Be familiar with the Trust incident reporting procedure - Datix
4.5 Use / wear any personal protective equipment or Trust uniform if supplied.
4.6 As a frontline representative of EME Services it is essential that you should present a neat, tidy and professional image. You should also behave courteously and professionally at all times.
