An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic, dynamic and self-motivated nurse to join the expanding Acute Oncology team for the Newcastle NHS Trust as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The role of the Acute oncology clinical nurse specialist provides urgent assessment, rapid initial management and appropriate specialist input for any patient presenting acutely unwell with problems relating to their cancer or cancer treatment.
The post holder will work as part of a dynamic team, assessing patients on a busy assessment area within NCCC who present acutely unwell. The post holder will have excellent time management and communication skills and be able to work under pressure.
The post holder will work autonomously providing support and advice to colleagues working across areas such as ED, SDEC, and inpatient ward areas, for unscheduled oncological/hematological emergency admission with regards to the following:
• Complications related to cancer treatment
• Complications of cancer
• Suspected malignancy of unknown origin
• MSCC

- Work as part of the acute oncology team across both sites (Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman), over seven days a week, including bank holidays
- The post holder will provide specialist, expert nursing care and support for patients with an oncological/hematological diagnosis, attending acutely unwell. You will advise and support clinical colleagues on the investigation, care and management of this group of patients
- Providing ongoing education of colleagues at all levels across the trust will be a central component
- Possess excellent communication skills and be able to communicate complex and sensitive information

- Provide specialist knowledge and support to patients via the emergency triage phone

The post holder should have sound communication skills, in order to manage complex conversation and undertake thorough telephone triage assessment and provide robust education to the multi-disciplinary team.
You will be expected to collect data to measure clearly defined objectives in order to monitor and maintain high standards of care and deliver high quality patient experience.
You must be an experienced registered nurse who has at least two year experience in Oncology and or Haematology and be willing to work long days (8-8) covering a 7-Day service including bank holidays.
History taken and clinical skills qualification would be desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse specialist as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.
Within the sphere of specialist practice:
- Is working towards advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice.
- Contributes to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients.
- Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
- Contributes to training and education within specialist area.
