Job overview
Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Trainer in Paediatric Dentistry based at Newcastle Dental Hospital in order to provide clinical teaching and leadership of various aspects of our clinical teaching programmes. The position builds on our recognition of the very important contribution that experienced dental practitioners make to the clinical training of our dental undergraduates by offering an enthusiastic individual the opportunity to contribute fully to the organisation and delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduate students.
You will be an experienced Dental Surgeon with an enthusiasm to communicate your own knowledge and experience to undergraduate students. You will have been fully registered with the GDC for at least 3 years with training experience within the clinical dental team. You will be offered a structured induction and support with the opportunity for further educational development. You will assume responsibility for the planning, co-ordination and delivery of specific components of undergraduate clinical training in partnership with your clinical academic colleagues. You should be comfortable in providing supervision to BDS dental and BSc dental therapy students in paediatric dentistry, on occasion, we may ask the successful applicant to work between other discipline areas (e.g. restorative dentistry) within their skillset and expertise. This is a 0.7 full time equivalent post.

The major focus of the role is to support the provision and development of clinical training for dental and dental therapy undergraduates. Experience in teaching is strongly desirable.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical:
· Undertake clinical teaching and supervision of undergraduate students in paediatric dentistry.
Administrative:
· Undertake patient administration and other clinical, academic and departmental administrative duties and take part in the day to day running of the dental hospital.
Audit:
· Participate in the clinical audit and governance activities of the Department/Dental Hospital/Trust.
Teaching:
· Provide supervision and support to undergraduate dental students on outpatient clinics, lead seminars and, contribute to the didactic lecture programme and formal examination processes.
· Participate in planning, co-ordination and delivery of specific components of the undergraduate programme in partnership with senior colleagues.

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
Essential criteria
- BDS or equivalent.
- GDC registerable qualification.
- Will have been fully registered with the General Dental Council for at least 3 years.
- MFDS or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Formal training in teaching / teaching qualification.
- Higher clinical qualification.
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- At least 3 years or more post qualification experience.
- Completed VT/FD/ GPT training programme in general dental practice or salaried dental services. OR One-year equivalent in recognised hospital post as SHO/ DCT2 or above.
- Some teaching/training experience within the clinical dental team.
Desirable criteria
- Principal / senior dentist in General or Specialist Practice. OR Experience as VT trainer. OR Experience as a Senior Dental Clinician / Trainer in salaried dental services.
- Training experience with undergraduates.
- Clinical supervision of junior hospital staff or VTs.
