Applications are invited for the post of Endocrine Surgery Senior Clinical Fellow. The successful candidate will work in the Breast & Endocrine Surgery Unit with the Endocrine Surgery team. The Endocrine surgery team offer the full range of thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery, including benign and malignant pathologies, open, minimally invasive and Robotic Surgeries. The Unt also provides a city-wide endocrine surgery Consultant on call service. Additionally the unit sees subspecialist tertiary referrals such a post-renal transplant hyperparathyroidism, phaeochromocytoma, Adrenocortical Carcinoma and paediatric thyroid surgery.
The endocrine surgery team work closely with the breast surgery team and provide cross-cover on occasions, for ward care and theatre assistance. The units have strong links to the psychology, medical endocrinology, nuclear medicine and clinical chemistry departments, and the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology.

LUHFT are a busy tertiary referral centre for Breast & Endocrine surgery. Patients are referred from across Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man for specialist input. There is collaborative MDT working with Endocrine Surgery MDT, Adrenal MDT and regional Thyroid Cancer MDT. There is close collaboration with the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology. The unit undertakes around 300 Thyroid/Parathyroid operations and 80 Adrenalectomies each year.
The successful applicant will contribute to the delivery of the Endocrine Surgery service at both Royal Liverpool & Aintree University Hospital sites: along with Broadgreen Hospital the 3 sites are within Liverpool city area with hospital transport available in hours if needed. They will contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from Endocrine Surgical conditions. The work will be supported and supervised by consultant surgeons and physicians attached to the unit. The applicant will receive training in surgery on the Thyroid, Parathyroids and Adrenal glands. They will carry out pre- and post-operative care as necessary. The incumbent will also be responsible, with other junior staff, for the day-today care of the unit’s patients. Prospective audits are practised by the directorate. All trainees and clinical fellows will be responsible for the collation and presentation of departmental audit data at regular audit meetings held in house and at regional meetings.

The Clinical Component

Research
The Unit has a track record of clinical investigation; with staff contributing regularly to national and international meetings. As a teaching hospital the post holder will have the opportunity to participate in audit and clinical research.
Teaching
Medical students are attached to the breast & endocrine surgery unit. The post-holder will be expected to give clinical teaching to undergraduates. There is also nurse training and mentorship to which the Specialist Registrars and fellows are expected to contribute.
Duties
Attend regular operating lists, outpatient clinics, audit and academic meetings and case conferences.
Some operating lists maybe on a Saturday and some clinic in the evening hours 1700-2030.
Take part in daily ward rounds to be held with all the other Resident surgical staff on duty.
Support the pre-operative nursing team remotely with clinical decision making and specialist referrals to aid peri-op assessment.
There is no Out of Hour On call as part of this post; but if this is important to the post-holder we can facilitate participation on an ad hoc basis.

Other staff include Specialist Registrars (ST3-8), Core Training doctors and FY1 doctors. We have a team of Theatre First Assistants, a full time Endocrine Surgery Specialist Nurse, Breast Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Breast Care Nurses, Breast Reconstruction Nurse, and pre-operative assessment nurses; split across the 2 sites. We have a dedicated team of administrative and clerical staff including in-patient booking.
Facilities in the Unit
The Breast/Endocrine Surgery Unit has in-patient beds in the Royal Liverpool Hospital (RLH), Aintree University Hospital(AUH) and Broadgreen Hospital (Breast patients only); with the majority of breast surgery managed as a day-case. The RLH & AUH are exceptionally well equipped for all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures necessary for the efficient care of endocrine surgery patients. There is 24-hour access to the emergency theatres and all routine pathology services. The radiology department is equipped for emergency and elective diagnostic procedures, including US, MR and CT scanning. Nuclear Medicine offer diagnostic and therapeutic services including latest developments such as Choline PET scanning.
The library facilities in the hospitals are supplemented by excellent medical libraries at the Liverpool Medical Institute. Postgraduate teaching is provided by inhouse seminars, during MDTs and at audit meetings.
Conditions of Service
This post is covered by the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) Terms and Conditions of Service. The post holder is required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold a licence to practice.
Standards of Conduct and Behaviour
