Job overview
Our team of seven nuclear medicine physicists is one short – could that be YOU?
The Nuclear Medicine and Bone Mineral Densitometry Unit is provided by the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (NMPCE) Directorate of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust across 3 sites: University Hospital of North Durham, Darlington Memorial Hospital and the University Hospital of Hartlepool.
The Durham and Darlington Medical Physics departments (where this role is based) comprises approximately 25 staff, including clinical scientists, clinical technologists and assistant practitioners. There are newly installed gamma camera and DXA scanners at each of the two sites where the service is provided - University Hospital North Durham (UHND) and Darlington Memorial Hospital (DMH). A state-of-the-art new radiopharmacy opening soon at UHND will support services at both sites.
Around 9,000 diagnostic and therapy procedures are performed each year for the specialties within CDDFT, including paediatrics, oncology, cardiology and neurology. The service works closely with the nuclear medicine service at University Hospital of Hartlepool.
The team also plays a role in the teaching and assessment for the National School of Healthcare Science Scientific Training Programme associated MSc course in Medical Physics at Newcastle University, as one of only three accredited teaching centres in England.

The successful applicant will participate in all aspects of service provision, including equipment commissioning, testing and management; radiopharmacy; providing sound scientific advice to clinical technologists and trainees; and promoting research and development within the unit as well as regionally. The working base will be the University Hospital of North Durham, however the successful applicant will be required to travel unit-wide to meet the exigencies of the service.
For appointment at Band 8A the successful applicant will have considerable post-registration experience in the application of physics to clinical nuclear medicine and hold MPE certification. Applicants who have recently achieved HCPC registration or be eligible to register with the HCPC as a clinical scientist within a suitable timeframe (maximum 3 years) will be initially appointed at band 7. We will provide professional development opportunities to enable career development.

salary range: £55,690 - £62,682 per annum

- Knowledge of legislation, standards and protocols relating to clinical nuclear medicine work
- Understanding of the functioning and safe use of an extensive range of nuclear medicine equipment
- IT skills including database, spreadsheet, nuclear medicine software applications development
- Ability to communicate effectively with other health professionals and patients
- Good writing skills.
- Good time management and organisational skills
- Considerable post-registration experience in the application of physics to clinical nuclear medicine, including quality assurance and calibration procedures relating to a range of nuclear medicine equipment.
- Experience in training and supervision of trainees.
- First or second class honours degree in physics or related physical science
- Eligible for corporate membership of IPEM.
