Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

Job overview
The Cardiovascular Directorate is seeking a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon with a Specialist Interest in Aortic Surgery (full-time 10 PA) to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team. The post holder will be based predominantly at St Thomas’ Hospital, London (STH).
The Cardiac Surgery department at St. Thomas’ Hospital has two subspecialty teams, a Mitral Valve Team and an Aortic Surgery team. We are proud to be a model in that respect and we are following the GIRFT recommendations, with a specialist aortic dissection on-call rota. There is continuous collaboration with the Vascular Surgeons, dedicated aortic surveillance clinics, a comprehensive thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair programme, a weekly aortovascular MDT (joint with Vascular Surgery) and a monthly specialist aortic root MDT (joint with Cardiology).
Advert
To provide a clinical Cardiac Surgical service for adult patients as part of the whole Cardiac Surgery team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. As a tertiary service, with the majority of referrals coming from District General Hospitals in Kent and South East England, this will include involvement in outreach clinics.
The clinical service consists of all aspects of elective and emergency adult cardiac surgery with the exception of transplantation. The majority of the work consists of coronary revascularisation and valve surgery. There is a well established Minimal Access Aortic Surgery programme and a Minimal Access Mitral programme. There is a major aorto-vascular service with a dedicated AAD on-call service.
To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care
The post-holder will assist in providing cross-cover for inpatient care and picking up theatre lists during annual leave absences. On the weeks where the post-holder is Consultant of the Week, they will not have any scheduled theatre lists nor clinics. These theatre lists will be cross covered by colleagues. The fixed and flexible operating days will be defined – i.e. Wednesday fixed theatre list and alternative Monday flexible theatre list.

The Cardiovascular Centre at St Thomas' Hospital is one of the largest in the UK, with facilities including a six-bedded Coronary Care Unit, a cardiology ward with special expertise in adult congenital heart disease, a suite of five Catheter laboratories, four Cardiothoracic theatres, a state of the art hybrid theatre and a dedicated outpatient centre. There is excellent provision of the full range of non-invasive testing including cardiac MRI.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice.
• To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
• To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
• To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
• Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
• To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director.
• To act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Director to ensure external accreditation of training post.
• To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:
• Clinical efficiency e.g. LOS reductions, reducing cancelled operations and DNA rates.
• Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates.
• Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.
• Operational efficiency e.g. day-case rates, waiting list activity and demand management.
• The Trust will follow the GMC recommended procedures for revalidation.

- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in relevant speciality
- Specialist training in Cardiac Surgery
- Experienced independent operator for cardiac surgery, especially for ‘routine’ CABG, AVR and AVR + CABG
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
Desirable criteria
- Post-CCT fellowship experience in an area of sub-specialty interest e.g. mini-mitral, aorto-vascular
- Proven track record of research in cardiac surgery
- Leadership of care group/directorate (or equivalent)
Qualifications/Training

- FRCS or equivalent
- On the Specialist Register of The GMC or within 6 months of eligibility at the time of interview
