The appointee will be expected to fulfil the following duties with the agreed Job Plan.

PRINCIPLE ELEMENTS OF THE POST

Clinical

The Clinical Fellow will have ongoing involvement throughout the appointment with the routine paediatric rheumatology outpatient clinics held at LRI and outreach centres and with the paediatric rheumatology inpatient/ day-care service at LRI.

In addition, the activities in the typical week will include, ward rounds, day-care reviews, assessment of inpatient referrals, virtual homecare prescribing, virtual day-care prescribing, response to all clinical queries, telephone consultations (outreach, primary care, other specialties) and joint injections.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Paediatric Rheumatology Consultants and:

Participate in the out-patient care of a full range of Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology conditions
Participate in the emergency and elective management of children, teenagers and young adults with rheumatology problems admitted to University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
Review paediatric rheumatology patients as required in the paediatric/TYA day care unit.
Be responsible for arranging the admission of patients for inpatient and day case investigations and treatment.
Be responsible alongside Consultants for Entonox and theatre lists for children/TYA patients undergoing joint injections
Participate in assessment of in-patient referrals
Respond to clinical queries and communicating effectively with outreach, primary care, other specialties and families
Be responsible for virtual prescribing for day care and home care for Paediatric Rheumatology patients
Liaise closely with the specialist nurses
Work closely with the multidisciplinary team ensuring co-ordinated delivery of care
Attend/contribute to MDTs
Participate in teaching, audit and service development

Teaching

Both main campuses of the Trust are major centres for undergraduate and postgraduate education and teaching. The appointee will be expected to join our teaching programme helping with teaching paediatric rheumatology to undergraduate medical students and other professionals, in addition to opportunities for local and regional presentations and publications.

Audit/QIP and Research:

The appointee will be expected to actively participate in all the audit/QIP activities of the department. The paediatric Rheumatology service at UHL NHS trust is involved in a number of national and international research trials. The appointee should actively participate in all the research activities of the department

KEY RESULT AREAS

Service Delivery & Development

To provide paediatric and TYA outpatient and inpatient services.
To work collaboratively with the paediatric rheumatology team and other services.
To instigate and participate in clinical audits.
To participate in medical education, teaching and training.
To work with the team to develop and review protocols of care.
To participate in MDT meetings.
To actively ensure the appropriate safeguarding of patients.

Governance (E.g., NHSLA, CQC, Audit)

To work effectively with the CBU clinical quality & safety co-ordinator to identify and reduce risk, incidents and complaints to ensure that the team learn from any such occurrences to improve patient safety.

Patient Service

To be responsible for ensuring that consistently high standards of patient care is delivered by example and mentorship.
To ensure that patients and families become expert in their own care.

Research and Teaching at Leicester Childrens Hospital

To instigate and participate in clinical audits.
To support the paediatric research profile.
Participate in regular ward teaching of medical students and in weekly case presentations and junior medical staff teaching.
The fellow will also be encouraged to participate in the teaching programmes for nursing and paramedical staff.

It is the aim of the Leicester Children's Hospital to continue to develop the University Hospitals of Leicester as a recognised centre of excellence. This will require not only excellence in the clinical service but also an on-going programme of excellence in education and research.
