Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

The St John’s Institute of Dermatology provides a comprehensive general dermatology service, as well as a wide range of multi-disciplinary specialist services (see our web page). Its primary role is the delivery of excellence in clinical service, education and training, research and development in Dermatology and is one of the largest outpatient facilities at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Job Summary:
§ To contribute to, and receive subspecialty training in complex dermatologic surgery including Mohs’ micrographic procedures, PDT and other subspecialty interventions for treatment of skin cancer
§ To participate in all aspects of service delivery as related to skin cancer including multidisciplinary non-melanoma skin cancer meetings and weekly clinical rounds.
§ To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care

Clinical:
The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of dermatologic surgery services to the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to include:
- Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer excision
- Appropriate reconstructive techniques including flaps and grafts for resultant defects
- Photodynamic therapy
- Laser treatment of vascular and pigmented lesions
- Laser ablative techniques (as appropriate).
- Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
- Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.
The appointed trainee would be expected to be competent in dermatological surgery, as delivered by their host country’s accredited residency program. This post will build on and expand these competencies and deliver appropriate training to achieve the following:
- proficiency in Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer excision
- appropriate reconstructive techniques including flaps and grafts for resultant defects
- competency in performing laser treatment of vascular and pigmented lesions
- laser ablative techniques (as appropriate).
The post will also provide exposure to and training in, complex skin cancer management and successful multi-disciplinary team working as a participant in a broad range of specialist skin cancer clinics at St Johns (eg tertiary referral non melanoma skin cancer service, rapid access assessment and treatment skin cancer service). All the requirements of the BAD / BSDS post-CCT curriculum requirements will be met.
