Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced clinical pharmacist to join our department to lead on Education and Training. The post holder will have excellent leadership and management skills who is passionate about personal and professional development for our staff. They should have experience as a Designated Supervisor and a Designated Prescribing Practitioner and a thorough understanding of the foundation trainee pharmacist pathway.
We are looking for someone with vision, who can engage with and influence a range of different leaders and healthcare professionals including medical, nursing, pharmacy and university staff.
The post holder is expected divide their time evenly between the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital.

The post holder will lead on the delivery of the foundation trainee pharmacist year. Organise their timetables, placements, training opportunities and cross sector experiences. They will also organise the cross-sector experiences for our community colleagues. The post holder will be responsible for the design and implementation of the new multi-sector placements required for the 2028/29 cohort.
The post holder will work closely with the team at Newcastle University School of Pharmacy and be responsible for leading on the delivery of the undergraduate placement programme which is primarily delivered by our Clinical Technicians for Undergraduate Placements. The post holder will be tasked with ensuring the professional and clinical quality of the placements and maintaining the SLA in place.
The post holder will be the pharmacy department lead for non-medical prescribing and should have a good understanding of the legal processes involved. They will lead on the implementation of the Scope of Practice in Prescribing for the pharmacists due to qualify in August 2026. They will also link in with the cross sector placements and design the placements to that the trainees are able to attain skills and experiences unique to the hospital sector.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will work with the other senior lead clinical pharmacists and leadership team to be involved in workforce development within the department. To play an active role in the delivery of the new Transitional Band 6 to 7 pharmacist pathway. To seek out and communicate opportunities for professional development to the rest of the clinical team.
Take on a leadership role, act as a role model and be an ambassador for Newcastle Hospitals when attending regional and national meetings
- Organise rotas and give clear educational support to junior members of the teams
- Participate in ward based audits related to medicines management and governance
- Take on managerial responsibilities such as direct line management, designated supervisor (DS) for foundation trainee pharmacists, designated prescribing practitioner (DPP).
- Contribute to extended hours working (late nights, weekends and bank holidays). There is no expectation to contribute to the on call rota.
- Work operationally as part of our dispensary team; have allocated clinical screening slots and helping out during busy periods
- To perform the professional role of a registered pharmacist, including advice, supervision and co-operation with colleagues, particularly in relation to support/cover for absent colleagues.
Interviews will take place on at Eldon Court Education Centre. Candidates will be asked to deliver a focus group followed by an interview.
