We’re looking for people who share our values of compassion, accountability and optimism to help us provide high quality care for the patients, carers, families and communities we serve. We specialise in NHS mental health and learning disability services and we’re proud to make a difference every day.
At SPFT we put people first. We’ll do everything possible to help you feel respected, valued and included. You’ll have opportunities to learn, grow and gain new experiences to support your career, with access to lifelong learning and professional development.
We actively promote flexible working and understand how important work life balance is, especially in healthcare. Whether it’s part time hours, hybrid working or flexible start and finish times, we’ll explore what works for you and the role.
We recognise that AI is becoming part of daily life and you may choose to use it to help prepare your application. We welcome innovation but ask that anything you submit reflects your own abilities, experience and voice. AI can support how you describe your skills and experience, but it should never replace your own words as we want to get to know you.
We’re shaping a workplace where ideas are encouraged, technology supports you and everyone has a voice in how we improve. If that sounds like the kind of organisation you want to be part of, we’d love to hear from you.
Job overview
We have a exciting vacancy for a highly motivated, academically able and team-oriented Band 4 Assistant Psychologist to join the Selden Centre specialist hospital for adults with Learning Disabilities (3 days a week) and Community Learning Disability Team (CLDT) based in Uckfield (2 days a week).
The Selden Centre is based on the Swandean hospital site in Worthing and the CLDT support adults with learning disabilities in the Eastbourne, Downs and Weald regions of East Sussex. We are friendly, forward-thinking and innovative teams, comprising of Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Psychiatrists, Behaviour Specialists, Social Workers and Clinical Psychologists.
The post is a year-long contract. The post offers a valuable range of experience for aspiring psychologists. A number of former post-holders have progressed to Clinical Psychology and other applied psychology training posts. The work will primarily be at base for the days on which the AP works at the Selden Centre but there are some opportunities for hybrid working between the team base and remote working from home for the CLDT post.
Previous post holders have chosen to live in the local vibrant city of Brighton and Hove as this is central to both bases and offers opportunities for an engaging social and cultural life.
This post covers Swandean, Worthing and Bellbrook in Uckfield.

The role will be varied but will involve assisting the Clinical Psychologists in their clinical and service-related work. A range of psychological models are used in the teams including Positive Behavioural Support (PBS), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Systemic models.
Roles at the Selden Centre will include running a weekly ward 'community meeting', data collection and interpretation to support functional assessments, completing audits including of restrictive practices, gathering and presenting outcome data and facilitating wait-list management tools.
Within the CLDT, the role will include administrative tasks such as clinic bookings, updating the waitlist as well as audit and service development projects. We would particularly encourage applications from graduate psychologists who have some experience of, and/or an interest in developing their skills in, these models.
A number of the people the teams support are autistic and there are opportunities to develop skills in supporting people who are neurodivergent. The post-holder will be invited to all learning disability psychology CPD and business events.
