Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

The British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BSBMTCT) is seeking to appoint a 0.8 WTE Chief Executive, initially for 18 months, to lead the work of the Society and its national data registry.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the senior executive of the British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BSBMTCT) and its UK and Republic of Ireland Registry. The CEO holds corporate responsibility for the organisation’s strategic leadership, operational delivery, financial sustainability, governance, workforce leadership, and national and international influence.
Working to strategic aims set by the Board of Trustees, the CEO exercises significant professional autonomy and judgement in determining how these aims are achieved. The role involves complex and high-impact decision-making in environments characterised by uncertainty, competing priorities, financial risk, regulatory requirements, and reputational sensitivity.
The CEO provides executive leadership to ensure the effective delivery of BSBMTCT’s nationally significant functions, including oversight of a major clinical registry that informs NHS commissioning, service planning, research, clinical standards, policy development, and patient outcomes across the UK and Republic of Ireland.
The CEO also acts as principal executive advisor to the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee, ensuring they receive timely, high-quality information, professional advice, and assurance to support effective governance and informed strategic decision-making.

The British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BSBMTCT) is the professional society for bone marrow and stem cell transplant centres across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Forty-nine NHS and private member centres contribute data to the BSBMTCT Registry, established in 2001 as the UK subset of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) registry.
Our purpose is to improve patient outcomes – both survival and quality of life – by advancing the fields of blood and marrow transplantation and cellular therapy. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Chief Executive will work closely with the Board, Executive Committee, Subcommittees and the Head of Registry and will:
- Provide leadership to BSBMTCT and be responsible for the strategic and operational management and administration of the Society within the strategic and accountability framework laid down by the Board of Trustees.
- Work closely with our member NHS and private transplant centres, partners, staff and volunteers, improving the Society’s profile and maximising overall impact/opportunities to improve patient outcomes – both survival and quality of life - by advancing the fields of blood and marrow transplantation and cellular therapy.
- Be responsible for ensuring that the Society achieves its strategic aims and objectives.
- In partnership with the President, enable the Board, Executive Committee, Clinical Trials Sub-Committee, Scientific Lead, Vaccination and Infection Sub-Committee, Advanced Cellular Therapy Sub-Committee, Workforce Sub-Committee, Guidelines Sub-Committee, Indications Sub-Committee to fulfil their duties and responsibilities for the proper governance of the Society and development in line with best practise codes set out by the Charity Commission.
- Forge mutually beneficial partnerships to accelerate progress across the stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy ecosystem.
- Support and develop a large and expanding group of clinicians and wider NHS staff working across the UK and Republic of Ireland who actively serve on BSBMTCT committees and sub-committees, and our staff team, all of whom work remotely.
- Manage performance and the development and well-being of the multidisciplinary staff team, creating a fully inclusive and diverse work environment which adheres to best practices.
- Ensure that high standards of financial and corporate governance are maintained.
- Work in partnership with the President, President Elect, Past President, Secretary, Treasurer, Head of Registry and the Sub-Committee Chairs to ensure that the Board formulate and regularly review the Society’s strategic and operating plans.
- To continuously ‘horizon scan’ to enable the Society to respond to the changing professional needs of our members, confidently managing complex and fast-changing situations, making executive-level decisions based on a sound understanding of the related circumstances.
- Grow and develop BSBMTCT into a strong, sustainable and respected Society and Registry.
- Provide strategic income generation leadership, maximising income generation opportunities and net income growth; building the team as well as relationships with senior stakeholders locally and nationally.
- To oversee, manage and plan mitigations for all risks to the Society, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and the governance requirements set out by the Charity Commission.
- Ensure that the Board, Executive Committee and sub-committees receive timely advice and appropriate monitoring information on all relevant matters.
- Raise the profile of the Society across the UK, Republic of Ireland and the world.
