Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Job Title: Medical Education and Simulation Fellow
Location: 1 post at Royal Brompton Hospital
This is a fixed term post for 12 months in the first instance, extendable by mutual consent, for those interested in developing a career in medical simulation and education. This exciting and predominantly educational role carries responsibility for coordination and provision of teaching and simulation, including clinical skills, for post-graduate/IMT doctors, student physician associates and year 6 imperial medical students. The trainee will work to develop and deliver staff training and medical simulation projects. Approximately 1 day per week will incorporate a clinical service commitment in a specialty of the successful applicant’s choosing, negotiable by mutual consent.
The trainee will be expected to complete a postgraduate qualification in medical education. This will be fully funded as part of the post and is normally in the form of a postgraduate certificate (PGcert). However, the successful applicant could undertake a diploma should a PGcert have already been achieved.

The fellow will work with final year Imperial medical students in both cardiology and respiratory and will have the opportunity to be involved in bedside teaching, simulated training, small group teaching and other teaching format. The nature of the placements at Royal Brompton means the fellow will be able to capitalise on small group numbers to deliver learner-focused sessions, and the fellow will have the opportunity to shape the students’ learning experience.
In addition, the fellow will also work with the clinical skills and simulation coordinator, Royal Marsden simulation fellow and Harefield Hospital education fellow to provide simulation for IMT trainees. They will be supported to organise and co-facilitate a series of immersive simulation and simulated skills training days for IMT doctors from Royal Brompton, Marsden and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
There will be additional opportunity to support in facilitating established consultant led simulated training programmes across specialties including respiratory, cardiology, anaesthetics and ICM.

The fellow will have ample opportunity to develop leadership and management skills. The fellow will work closely with IMT TPD and educational leads to help facilitate IMT training and to support IMT trainees in reaching their curriculum objectives, including through planning and specific training opportunities such as clinical skills and PACES teaching.
Additionally, the trainee will have the opportunity to work with the chief registrar in developing innovative education or service programmes - current projects underway include launching a physician associate student training programme.
The Fellow will have approximately 1 day per week which can be focused on clinical care based on mutual agreement, in cardiology, respiratory, Intensive care medicine, cardiothoracic surgery or anaesthetics, based on mutual agreement. This will incorporate attendance to either inpatient or outpatient settings with opportunities to develop a specific skill (eg echocardiography; bronchoscopy; ITU experience). The exact clinical experience developed can be tailored to suit the applicant’s individual needs.

- Specialty specific teaching and journal clubs, which the fellow can attend when their schedule allows

- Designed and delivered a series of MDT in situ simulation in their area of interest, leading to improved patient safety and education
- Established a programme of clinics and skills training in the clinical environment for IMT trainees

- Completed faculty development training in in situ and sim lab simulation
- Been involved in the innovative in-situ SPRinT programme
- Attended the Royal Brompton School of Bronchoscopy course
- Will attend and present at simulation conferences later this year
Expected outcomes
- The successful candidate will be provided with training in the use of simulation equipment and will be encouraged to develop their teaching skills. They will be expected to identify through critical incident review with the risk management team where simulation education may improve patient safety for the future. The Fellow will be expected to lead delivery of existing medical education courses and develop new educational programmes incorporating medical simulation.
- The Fellow will be expected to maintain a learning portfolio reflecting upon their progress through the fellowship. The Fellow will be expected to complete a post graduate certificate (PGcert) in medical education
- The Fellow will be encouraged to become involved in one of the on-going research projects within the hospital and to submit and present work at educational conferences and meetings with a view to attaining publications.
Communication & networking

teams both within the centre and within the clinical area providing mobile simulation

needed in future senior educational Consultant posts.

Salary
Salary is in accordance with the national salary scale. This post does not include any on-call commitments.
Terms and Conditions of Employment

Study Leave Full time simulation fellow positions are awarded a maximum of 30 days of
study leave per year.

Post holders must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with the Data Protection Act of 1998. Post holders must not, without prior permission, disclose any information regarding patients or staff. If any member of staff has communicated any such information to an unauthorised person those staff will be liable to dismissal. Moreover, the Data Protection Act 1998 also renders an individual liable for prosecution in the event of unauthorised disclosure of information.
Following the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) 2005, post holders must apply the Trust’s
FOI procedure if they receive a written request for information.

Health and Safety
All post holders have a responsibility, under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and subsequently published regulations, to ensure that the Trust’s health and safety policies and procedures are complied with to maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors and employees.

health and safety hazards and to draw to the attention of the Departmental Safety Officer

Infection Control
All post holders have a personal obligation to act to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). They must attend mandatory training in Infection Control and be compliant with all measures required by the Trust to reduce HCAIs. All post holders must comply with Trust infection screening and immunisation policies as well as be familiar with the Trust’s Infection Control Policies, including those that apply to their duties, such as Hand Decontamination Policy, Personal Protective Equipment Policy, safe procedures for using aseptic techniques and safe disposal of sharps.
Risk Management
All post holders have a responsibility to report risks such as clinical and non-clinical
accidents or incidents promptly. They are expected to be familiar with the Trust’s use of risk assessments to predict and control risk, as well as the incident reporting system for learning from mistakes and near misses in order to improve services. Post holders must also attend training identified by their manager, or stated by the Trust to be mandatory.
Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
Post holders have a general responsibility for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults in the course of their daily duties and for ensuring that they are aware of the specific duties relating to their role.
Sustainability
It is the responsibility of all staff to minimise the Trust’s environmental impact by recycling
wherever possible, switching off lights, computers monitors and equipment when not in use, minimising water usage and reporting faults promptly.

It is the Trust’s policy to promote health. Smoking, therefore, is actively discouraged. It is
illegal within Trust buildings and vehicles.
