Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

Are you a keen newly qualified midwife seeking your first position as a midwife? We have converted our maternity leave positions to enable newly qualified midwives who are yet to secure a role, the opportunity to join our team on a 6m fixed term contract. You will be supported to join the staff bank and we will commit to continuing to support you for a further 12m while you undertake bank shifts to allow you to complete your preceptorship flexibly during this period should you wish to.
The supported sign off is new for the Trust and should you be shortlisted further information about the programme will be available along with the requirements for sign off in this programme.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an assessment centre, you will be required to pass the practical element before progressing to interview on the same day.

The hospital rotation could include working on the Hospital Birth Centre (Obstetric Labour Ward), Postnatal Ward or the Antenatal Ward. Bank work is subject to availability in each area.
We have an extensive preceptorship package which includes alongside your mandatory training - Simulation skills, IV Cannulation, Suturing, Bereavement, Screening study days with orientation in each new area.
You will be supported to develop your competencies in suturing and cannulation. You will be expected to participate in the care of women requiring both high and low risk care, bereavement care, induction of labour and the immediate postnatal period. We work as part of a MDT and you will liaise with and receive support from other health care professionals on the ward such as doctors, nurses and more senior midwives.
You will be supported by our Senior Midwifery Team, Practice leaders, our PMAs and PDM team to build on your skills and confidence as you progress through your preceptorship.
You will only be signed off for preceptorship if you have completed a minimum of 780 additional midwifery hours after your 6m fixed term contract and all other competencies and requirements have been completed.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Duties
Responsible for carrying out clinical practice within designated clinical areas,
ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based midwifery assessment care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations for women and babies is provided from admission through to discharge.
Will be responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
To act as advocate for women within the area, to ensure a woman centred approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
To ensure that mothers and babies receive high quality evidence based care and a positive patient experience, respecting their individual needs, preferences, cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Recognise avoid and report situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the individuals.
Will advise on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness.
Recognise the significance of clinical observations made, and use them to develop and initiate midwifery assessments and devise a plan of care, escalating where appropriate.
Carry out those activities necessary to conduct a comprehensive assessment of a mother and baby’s clinical care and wellbeing.
Will ensure that all mothers and babies will have a discharge plan that is safe and appropriate for their needs.
Carry out midwifery procedures and treatments, checking on and maintaining the highest possible standards.
Work alongside the multi-disciplinary team.
Take a clear and concise history from women by assessing their health and well being and complete documentation ensuring that all entries are accurate and legible and that all information systems are maintained.
Utilise the skills of a registered midwife in the provision of safe care to awomen across the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods, including appropriate referral as required.
To be responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication and appropriate documentation.
Take appropriate personal protective measures including correct use of equipment to prevent and minimise risk of exposure to body fluids, and safely dispose of sharps and clinical waste.
Professional Responsibilities
Is wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence.
Will act in accordance with Local, Hospital and Statutory Guidelines & Policies including Health and Safety initiatives.
Will be familiar with the Health and Safety at Works Act, and be aware of Its’ implications and ensure that local unit and departmental policies are followed.
Will work in accordance with Corporate Objectives
Will compile a personal & professional portfolio for preceptorship as a newly qualified midwife and future revalidation (in conjunction with the compilation of a Personal Development Plan).
Will maintain a high standard of care and be courteous and polite at all times.
Provide total care to a caseload of women in liaison with the other staff and under the direction of the MPL or senior midwife.
Will adopt a woman centred approach to clinical practice.
In liaison with the MPL ensure that midwifery practice is in keeping with current research findings and is appropriate for each individual woman for whom care is being provided.
Will practice in a cost effective and cost aware manner
Will ensure that the Hospital’s policy is understood and carried out with regard to the care and custody of drugs/medications, especially with regard to those covered by the Control of Drugs Act.
Will be familiar with the ward’s fire, manual handling and C.O.S.H.H policies.
Will be fully conversant with the trust major incident plan, and ensure own understanding of the procedure and support others as appropriate
Will establish a relationship with the practice development team and senior midwives to complete their portfolio and develop their clinical skills.
Take all possible precautions to safeguard the welfare and safety of staff, service users, visitors and the public, by implementing all policies related to health, safety, security and risk.
Report complaints, incidents and accidents to the MPL or midwifery manager.
Work with the MPL in maintaining of standards of care
Communication
Will be responsible for the provision and receipt of complex, sensitive or distressing information related to patients, patient care, relatives, staff and other multidisciplinary colleagues.
Provides advice and support concerning the care or treatment of identified groups or categories of women and babies
Communicate effectively and efficiently with all members of the multidisciplinary team regarding care.
Will communicate with women and relatives, making reports and liaising, as appropriate, with medical staff other members of the care team and management.
Will give and receive Safe and appropriate handovers when transferring patient care or changing shifts and document these appropriately.
Report to the Doctor/Midwifery Practice Leader and members of the multidisciplinary team on a mother or baby’s condition, both verbally and in writing as necessary.
Attend and participate in ward meetings and contribute to new ideas and methods and assist in their implementation.
Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences to benefit patient care.
4.4 Education & Professional Development
Act as a role model, giving guidance, counselling and support to unqualified staff and students.
Assist with orientation programmes which familiarise new members of staff within your scope of practice.
Participate in the supervision and support of junior staff and students
Actively contribute to the teaching programme within the clinical area within your scope of practice.
Take every opportunity to maintain and improve knowledge and competence, and take steps to keep up to date with clinical and midwifery developments.
