Job overview
We invite applications from excellent clinical psychologists with a specific interest in neurorehabilitation to join the lead clinical neuropsychologist in providing specialist expertise within the inpatient MDTs at Hillingdon Hospital's Alderbourne and Daniel's Units.

We will consider applications from early‑career qualified psychologists (Band 7) who demonstrate high potential and a strong interest in developing their career in clinical neuropsychology within a supportive and structured learning environment. Upon satisfactory completion of an agreed set of target competencies, the post‑holder will be eligible for progression to a Band 8a position. We anticipate that this development will be achieved within 2–4 years, depending on the applicant’s initial level of knowledge and experience. If the applicant is unable to complete the required competencies, they will remain at Band 7.

Advert
· To work under the leadership of the clinical lead neuropsychologist to provide a highly specialist clinical psychology service embedded within the inpatient neurorehabilitation MDTs at Hillingdon Hospital (Alderbourne and/or Daniel’s), including specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.
· To provide clinical supervision and consultation as appropriate within the MDT, functioning as a specialist in neuropsychological aspects of neurorehabilitation.
Working for our organisation
This role is supported by 1-1 clinical supervision by the lead clinical neuropsychologist, the established unit MDTs, the wider Department of Health Psychology at Hillingdon Hospital, the community of practice of neuropsychologists in NWL and the CNWL Psychological Professionals network.
We have previously been successful in bids to NHSE for full QiCN funding in similar roles, and we intend to fully support the postholder to bid for this funding (if NHSE funding continues to be available) and with study leave and supervision needed to complete this high-level training, as part of a structured development plan.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
KR 1 Clinical and Client Care
· To provide highly specialist psychological and neuropsychological assessments, formulations and interventions for patients in the inpatient neurorehabilitation units at Hillingdon Hospital.
· To provide culturally appropriate psychological input to carers or families when required.
· To assess and monitor risk and work with the hospital liaison psychiatry team to draw up appropriate risk management plans.
· To act as senior clinician taking responsibility for initiating reviewing of new referrals appropriately, whilst consulting and providing psychoeducation for the multidisciplinary team.
KR 2 Contributing to team or service clinical functioning
· To contribute to the effective working of the MDT and to a psychologically informed framework for the service.
· To contribute to the MDT delivery of accessible and acceptable services to a diverse patient group.
· To be proactive in challenging discrimination and support the development of culturally competent services.
· To advise other members of the MDT on specialist (neuro)psychological care of clients.
· To liaise with referrers, GPs and other professionals concerned with clients in order to develop and review care plans.
· To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other team members.
· To maintain continuous contact and communication with colleagues & teams through MS Teams
· To attend and contribute to Departmental operational activities and initiatives (e.g. Away Days)
KR 3 Policy and service development
· To implement policies and procedures in own area of work, and to propose improvements or beneficial changes.
· To contribute to service development through undertaking and participating in appropriate projects.
· To contribute to the consultation and engagement of service users in planning and delivering services which meet the needs of local communities.
KR 4 Care or management of resources
· To take care of, and use carefully, the Trust’s equipment and physical resources.
· To ensure that the post-holder has sufficient resources by estimating future needs and requesting or ordering supplies as needed.
KR 5 Management and supervision
· To be responsible for the allocation and/or clinical supervision of the work of more junior psychologists with support from the clinical lead psychologist.
· To supervise trainee applied psychologists within own area of specialism.
· To contribute to the appraisal of more junior psychologists, as appropriate.
· To contribute to the recruitment of more junior psychologists, as appropriate.
· To provide supervision for the psychological work of other multi-disciplinary staff as appropriate.
KR 6 Teaching and Training
· To undertake occasional teaching and training of pre and post- qualification psychologists and specialised training to other professions as appropriate.
· To contribute to the development of the knowledge and skills base within the neurorehabilitation MDT by maintaining an active awareness of current developments in the field and by implementing knowledge gained in practice.
· To disseminate research and service evaluation findings through presentations and published articles.
KR 7 Record-keeping and Information Governance
· To ensure that all information generated by own work is recorded as required by Trust policies and local procedures.
· To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping and report writing, according to professional and Trust guidelines, including electronic data entry.
KR 8 Research and development
· To initiate, undertake, support and supervise regular complex service evaluation and audits.
· To provide expertise in a specialist research area which will contribute to the service
· To initiate and implement the development of outcome measurement and assessment and assist other staff in the implementation of same.
KR 9 Maintaining professional standards and continuing professional development
· To receive regular clinical and professional supervision from a more senior psychologist according to HCPC and Trust guidelines.
· To ensure own Continuing Professional Development in line with BPS and Trust Personal Development Plan requirements and the HCPC ‘Standards for Continuing Professional Development’.
· To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current developments in professional and clinical practice and of relevant legislation and policies.
· To comply with the HCPC ‘Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics’ and ‘Standards of Proficiency’, and ensure professional development in line with these.
· To adhere to the BPS’s Professional Practice Guidelines and Trust policies and procedures.
KR 10 General
· To work onsite at the neurorehabilitation units and in other locations when required.
· To be aware of risk relating to aggressive and challenging behaviour amongst the client group, and follow Trust policies relating to its management.
· To respond appropriately and professionally to emotionally distressing situations (e.g. life-altering traumatic injury, disinhibition, complex discharge decisions, ceiling of care decisions, end of life care) and to support others involved in such situations.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Clinical psychologist: Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent
- Completed training course in clinical supervision
- Registered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist, and evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC.
Desirable criteria
- Grade A or A* in A-Level (or equivalent) Psychology
- First-class BSc degree
- PhD degree
- Published a paper in a peer-reviewed journal (e.g. from the doctoral thesis)
- Post-doctoral training in clinical neuropsychology (e.g. completed or in progress QiCN)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of having trained or worked as a clinical specialist under supervision in neuropsychological or clinical health psychology services
- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature in neuropsychological or clinical health psychology services
- Experience of supervising assistant and trainee psychologists having completed the relevant training.
- Experience of carrying out post-doctoral research, audit or service evaluation projects
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in an inpatient neurorehabilitation MDT setting
- Experience of holding responsibility for multiprofessional teaching, training and supervision
- Experience of holding responsible roles in industries outside healthcare
- Previous experience of delivering psychological assessments and interventions with clients with severe and complex cognitive and behavioural challenges.

Essential criteria
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological and neuropsychological assessments and interventions in neurological and related medical conditions
- Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for the relevant treatments
- Advanced knowledge of psychological assessment and clinical psychometrics and neuropsychological testing
- Knowledge of legislation in relation to the patient group and clinical specialty (eg consent and capacity) and mental illness.
- Doctoral level knowledge of psychological research methodology and complex statistical analysis
