The Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) is the largest urology department in the southwest and prides itself on its patient-centred care. The Urodynamic unit is an integral part of the BUI and focuses on delivering high quality diagnostic investigations for patients’ suffering with lower urinary tract symptoms. Approximately 1000 urodynamic procedures are conducted every year by an experienced multidisciplinary team of Consultants (Urologists, Urogynaecologist and Colorectal surgeons), registrars, nurses, scientists, engineers, technicians and physiotherapists. The team perform a range of urodynamic investigations as well as being involved with other urological procedures such as Botox and Sacral Neuromodulation.
The Urodynamic team are active in research, often having the opportunity to present work at national and international conferences. They are also highly involved in teaching, with visitors frequently coming to learn in a world-renowned centre of excellence. The team also have an active role in formal teaching, with urodynamic courses being run throughout the year, across various cities and countries.
This post would therefore expose you to an exciting new set of clinical skills as well as the opportunity to be part of an enthusiastic team who promote high quality patient care through research and teaching. The role is initially a band 5 with the scope to develop to a band 6 on completion of complex video urodynamic competencies.

Previous urodynamic experience is not required however a basic understanding of urology is essential . All training and supervision will be provided to ensure confidence and competency prior to any autonomous working. Following this period of training the successful application will:
· Perform standard and ambulatory urodynamics. Progressing to video urodynamics.
· Analyse data and produce patient report.
· Carry out flows clinic, including post void residual ultrasound scanning.
· Carry out trial without catheter (TWOC) clinics.
· Teach intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC).
· Assist with flexible cystoscopies, to include intra-vesical Botox injections and suprapubic catheter insertions.
· Assist with Sacral Neuromodulation implants and clinics.
The post holder will actively contribute to the provision of a good learning environment by taking on the role of mentor/assessor for visitors and other staff within the department. They will be expected to attend multidisciplinary team meetings and partake in patient discussions. Successful applicants will also have the chance to engage in department research and teaching.

Organise and participate in the delivery of high standards of evidence based nursing care.

- Where relevant, responsible for the admission, assessment and preparation of patients undergoing treatment or investigations.
- To take personal responsibility for ensuring that patients are treated with courtesy at all times, the individual needs of patients are respected and confidentiality is maintained at all times.
- Liaise effectively with other disciplines or departments as appropriate.
- To be able to act in emergency situations and to be familiar with emergency procedures including fire and resuscitation.
- Ensure the safe custody of patients’ valuables and property according to Trust Policies (in emergency situations only).
- Report to nurse in charge/line manager all complaints, incidents or accidents involving self, staff, patients, visitors and complete relevant documentation according to Trust procedure.
- Be responsible for reporting and documenting any broken or damaged equipment according to Trust policy.
- To have detailed knowledge of Manual handling regulations particularly with regards to the moving and handling of patients. To be responsible for ensuring that assessment of patients’ manual handling needs are carried out.
- Ensure safe storage and disposal of substances hazardous to health in accordance with Trust policy. Ensure availability of facilities for disposal of sharps, toxic/cytoxic waste in accordance with trust policy.
- Assist with monitoring of stock and report to ensure adequate levels are maintained and that the correct quantities are in supply.
- Report reliably any episodes of sickness appropriately.
- To develop an understanding and working knowledge of urodynamic technical equipment – calibration, maintenance, problem solving, servicing and safety.
- To be flexible in working hours and patterns to meet the needs of the service.
