Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.
We have a reputation for clinical excellence and high quality teaching and research. We are part of King’s Health Partners, one of eight accredited UK academic health sciences centres. In partnership with King’s College London we have dedicated clinical research facilities including an MHRA accredited Phase I clinical trials unit.
Patients are at the heart of everything we do and we pride ourselves on ensuring the best possible patient experience as well as safe, high quality care. We are proud to have one of the lowest mortality rates in the NHS. Following a comprehensive Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection in 2019 we maintained our overall rating of ‘good’. Our adult community services achieved a rating of ‘outstanding’.
The commitment of our 23,500 staff is key to our success. We are one of the largest local employers and we aim to develop and support all our staff so they are able to deliver high quality, safe and efficient care. The 2019 NHS staff survey results show that we have one of the most engaged and motivated workforces in the NHS. We know this has a positive impact on the care provided to our patients.
We have one of the most ambitious capital investment programmes anywhere in the NHS.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a senior, hands-on data science role within a new enterprise data science function.
As a Senior Clinical Data Scientist, the post-holder owns the full health data science lifecycle from problem to solution, delivering pilots that aim to produce measurable improvements in clinical and operational KPIs.
Advert
- Take individual delivery ownership of data science pilots across the full lifecycle – problem definition, diagnosis, solution design, experimentation, implementation support, and outcome measurement – working autonomously and accountable for movement in target KPIs
- Apply modern machine learning, statistical, causal inference, and experimental methods to clinical and operational problems, recognising that a model is one option among several, not the default
- Act as a domain expert, using a clinical background to frame real-world clinical and operational problems and to validate that outputs are clinically and operationally meaningful
- Work with the data and software engineering team to productionise pilots and to monitor the impact and safety of deployed decision-support tools
- Take the analytical lead on highly complex and contentious healthcare data, devising methods, setting data-quality and performance KPIs, and making evidence-based recommendations to stakeholders
- Engage and influence clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders, and support more junior analysts and data scientists through mentoring and capability-building

AI Centre for Value-Based Healthcare
The AI, Data & Digital Innovation directorate is made up of data and technology experts - based in GSTT but working closely as a team with KCH and KCL.
The team forms part of the Artificial Intelligence Centre for Value-Based Healthcare - a consortium of NHS, academic, and industry partners from across the UK. This consortium offers expert professional technical delivery across data engineering, data science & AI development, and software engineering. Programmes include region-wide infrastructure delivery of cloud and federated platforms, multi-modal Real-World Data engineering, foundation model development, and development of different Language AI solutions.
London / GSTT Snowflake Platform
A secure data and research cloud platform that provides access to some of the broadest and deepest data in the NHS, including low latency patient-level data flows from primary care, linked to Acute Trust data. The platform also supports data science and deployment of advanced analytics and machine learning solutions, including Language AI for unstructured data extraction.

Take individual delivery ownership of data science problems and pilots across the full lifecycle – problem definition, diagnosis and exploration, solution design, experimentation, implementation support, and outcome measurement – working autonomously and being accountable for movement in target clinical and operational KPIs.
Develop analytic tools, models, and insights that support business planning, decision-making, and service improvement across clinical and operational pathways, applying machine learning, statistical, causal inference, and experimental methods as appropriate to the problem.
Evaluate and analyse highly complex and sometimes contentious healthcare data using tested and credible tools, applying robust problem-solving to find and understand root causes of problems and to identify opportunities for improvement.
Implement rapid Test-and-Learn cycles, starting small and scaling what works, and confirming benefit before scaling, iterating, or stopping.
Determine and track key performance indicators to enable easy tracking of deliverables and outcomes, working collaboratively with clinical leads and operational teams.
Track and evaluate changes, measuring impact and progress against agreed and robust improvement metrics, and embedding consideration of fairness and healthcare inequalities into impact evaluation.
Produce written documentation for a wide range of audiences, including project reports, communications, and explanations of technical and complex issues; make recommendations and present findings at all levels, including to senior clinical and management audiences.
Meet predefined objectives through autonomous working and the demonstration of a leadership style that is consistent with the Trust values.
Stakeholder Management
- Develop and present complex healthcare data in a way that facilitates understanding and drives action among clinical, operational, and technical audiences
- Identify, engage, and work with all relevant stakeholders to build a platform for service change and to inform improvement and transformation strategies
- Mediate and advise in areas where there are differences of clinical and professional opinion, providing and explaining data that may support decision-making
- Conduct end-user research with clinical and operational teams to understand needs, set performance targets, and ensure solutions are responsive to real-world requirements
- Design, facilitate, and lead workshops, stakeholder events, and project meetings with a wide range of clinical, technical, and operational stakeholders
- Manage, motivate, persuade, and influence multiple stakeholders and partners to ensure a shared purpose and that responsibilities are clear, agreed, and followed up in a timely manner.
Technical Aspects
- Provide hands-on expertise in data science and machine learning – including statistical and predictive modelling, LLMs, causal inference, and custom workflows – selecting best-in-class, fit-for-purpose methods for each problem
- Be responsible for devising and implementing methods for highly complex information collection, analysis, and presentation that meet the specification of the end user/client, including where data is difficult to obtain and interpret
- Be responsible for making informed, evidence-based recommendations to clients and stakeholders, based on credible evidence including the analysis of highly complex data
- Work with the data and software engineering team to productionise pilots into the GSTT Snowflake platform, and to monitor the impact and safety of deployed decision-support tools
- Use data-driven presentations to challenge existing work practices and beliefs for varying audiences, including clinical leads and staff, directors, and service users
- Devise and provide specialist training in data science, analytical, and improvement methods for a range of audiences, and transfer skills via mentoring, peer-coaching, and team development sessions
