Job overview
The Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) in Surgery is required to be an experienced registered healthcare professional working at an advanced level in clinical practice in either colorectal, HPB or UGI, they will be experienced in their specialty but will be expected to train to cover across specialties for less complex procedures. The SCP will be expected to exercise autonomy and decision making in a context of complexity, uncertainty and varying levels of risk, holding accountability for decisions made. The SCP will be able to manage clinical care in partnership with individuals, families and carers responding to differences in cultures, demographics and populations. Utilising critical analysis and synthesis in dealing with complex problems across a range of settings, enabling innovative solutions to enhance people’s experience and improve outcomes.

- Co-ordinate the care of patients throughout their surgical pathway with the multidisciplinary team and clinical services to ensure the effective management of this group of patients, including intraoperatively, which may include the insertion of ports, suturing, acting as robotic bed side assistant.
- Accountable for own actions in accordance with their professional regulatory body requirements.
- Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
- Lead and deliver clinical care, across a variety of settings, according to national and local guidelines ensuring delivery of evidence-based care and working towards the Trust vision of providing a World Class Service.
- Undertake an initial assessment to determine differential diagnosis, utilising advanced critical thinking and decision-making skills, deciding when necessary to refer to senior clinical colleagues.
- Act autonomously to assess, prioritise and provide expert clinical care which contributes to the patients’ treatment plan to ensure that optimum physical, psychological, and social care needs are met and ensures quality care.
- Request and interpret relevant investigations to facilitate the development of the patient’s management plan.

Communication
- Use the SBAR tool to escalate critically unwell or deteriorating patient which is outside of their scope of practice to more expert clinicians.
- Communicate complex information effectively to patients and carers, recognising the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding, including religious, cultural, and sexual orientation, and preferred ways of communicating are respected.
- Maintain effective communication with the multidisciplinary team, stakeholders and other services including providing constructive feedback as appropriate.
- Demonstrate advanced communication skills in breaking bad news and ability to support patients, family, and staff.
