We are looking for an HCPC-registered Band 5 Biomedical Scientist who is keen to gain hands-on experience in mass spectrometry within the specialist field of therapeutic drug monitoring. This is an ideal opportunity for a newly qualified BMS to start their journey or for an experienced BMS to gain some hand on experience with mass spectrometry and therapeutic drug monitoring. 

The Immunosuppression Monitoring Service at Harefield Hospital is recruiting to a full-time, 6 month fixed-term position (FTC end date: Friday 28th February 2027)

The role involves the manual extraction and preparation of blood samples prior to analysis by HPLC-MS/MS. You will also be involved in all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including specimen reception, stock control, review of analytical data, instrument maintenance, and result reporting.

The ideal candidate will have completed the IBMS Registration Portfolio and have experience working within a Biochemistry or Blood Sciences laboratory. Previous experience of HPLC and mass spectrometry is desirable, but not essential, as full training will be provided.

You will possess excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise your workload effectively and ensure turnaround times are met whilst maintaining the highest standards of quality and accuracy. You will be an exceptional team player, joining a small, friendly team that places patients at the forefront of everything we do.

The post is based at Harefield Hospital, outer London (UB96JH) with the laboratory located within the Magdi Yacoub Institute Heart Science Centre. The laboratory operates Monday to Friday, 08:30–16:45.

The post involves the manual extraction and preparation of blood samples prior to analysis by HPLC-MS/MS. All methods are manual and require a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. You will be required to pipette multiple batches of between 15 and 30 samples per day using a liquid crash extraction method involving centrifugation and supernatant decanting.

The laboratory operates two clinical mass spectrometry analysers coupled to dual-channel 2-D high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems. These platforms are used for the analysis of therapeutic drugs, including immunosuppressants, antifungals and inotropes.

You will also be involved in all day-to-day laboratory activities, including specimen reception, use of the EPIC Beaker Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), stock control, data review, instrument maintenance, result validation and authorisation. You will be responsible for operating and maintaining an analytical bench, while also supporting colleagues and assisting staff at all grades when required.

You will be expected to comply with HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics and maintain your professional registration. You will work in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.

Harefield Hospital

Based in Uxbridge, Northwest London, the hospital is one of the largest and most experienced centres in the world for heart and lung transplants. It has jointly pioneered work in the development of ‘artificial hearts’ (also known as left ventricular assist devices or LVADs). 

At our dedicated heart attack centre, we deal with heart attack emergencies from outer north-west London, providing primary angioplasty in our specialist catheter laboratories. We believe our arrival-to-treatment time of 27 minutes is one of the fastest in Europe. Speed of treatment has been shown to be crucial to survival in these cases.
