Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the West Midlands GP School for established Training Programme Directors (TPDs) to contribute to a total of 22 sessions across the West Midlands.
The positions would be most suited to established TPDs, however in exceptional circumstances, applications from suitably experienced candidates will also be considered but the applicants would need to demonstrate a knowledge of and commitment to Structured Learning. This will need to be evidenced in the application in order to be shortlisted.
The role involves working collaboratively with the wider GP School and local programme education teams to support GP Registrars to reach their full potential, progress successfully to MRCGP, and develop as adaptable GPs equipped for the future NHS.
Core responsibilities include enhancing the training experience for GP Registrars through:
Preparation and delivery of educational sessions
Educational facilitation and curriculum support
Pastoral and individual learner support
Advert
Supporting educational development across the GP School, particularly through the Structured Learning Programme, and where appropriate, health inequalities training, neurodiversity initiatives, iTAP, and Trainers’ Courses
Facilitating induction for GP Registrars, including enhanced support for international medical graduates and those new to the NHS
Working closely with GP practices and education providers to ensure high‑quality, balanced training placements
Organising and delivering face‑to‑face and virtual educational programmes
Providing timely educational and pastoral support to learners and educators
Ensuring appropriate assessment processes are in place, including effective ARCP delivery
Collaborating with senior educators, Training Hubs, Trusts, and partner organisations across the region
Working for our organisation
NHS England has a wide range of statutory functions, responsibilities and regulatory powers. These are focused on supporting the wider NHS to deliver high quality care, as well as doing those things that are best done once for the whole NHS.
Our staff bring expertise across clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education, and commercial specialisms — enabling us to design and deliver high-quality NHS services.
In March 2025, the Government announced that NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly merge functions, ultimately leading to NHS England being fully integrated into the department.
If you currently work within the NHS and if successful at interview, we will initiate an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). This retrieves key data from your current or previous NHS employer to support onboarding, including competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You may opt out at any stage of the process.
Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in our offices.
Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
We cannot offer visa sponsorship for any vacancies.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Facilitate induction for GP Registrars and provide enhanced support for international doctors and those new to the NHS.
- Work with GP practices and education providers to ensure balanced, supportive, high-quality rotations.
- Organise and deliver the educational programme (virtual and face-to-face).
- Support learners and educators by ensuring good communication and resolving issues promptly.
Ensure appropriate assessment processes including ARCP.
Alongside core TPD duties, these roles will support key regional development priorities, including:
- Structured Learning Programme (SLP) facilitation
The majority of sessions (at least 20) will support SLP delivery, typically on Fridays (morning, afternoon, or full day).
Remuneration will be for one session per week across the full year, inclusive of leave.
There will be a greater requirement for sessions during the first semester (August–December), although salary will be evenly distributed across the year.
Applications will also be considered if an applicant has the flexibility to offer 2 sessions of SLP facilitation per week. Currently these would both have to be on a FridaHealth Inequalities and Health Equity Focussed Training
Six roles are reserved for developing and delivering training focused on health inequalities.
These posts will be remunerated at 0.25 WTE (one session per month; 12 sessions per year), or at one session per week when combined with SLP delivery.
Given fluctuating demands, successful applicants will also be expected, where possible, to contribute to wider GP School and GP Academy of Learning initiatives, including:
Early consultation support iTAP for new starters (typically Tuesday–Thursday)
Supporting doctors with neurodiversity, promoting inclusive and adaptive learning environments
Contributing to Trainers’ Courses and broader GP educator development
Although postholders may be linked to a specific local programme, the role requires a flexible and responsive approach to working patterns and travel across the West Midlands. Flexibility throughout the year is essential due to variable workload demands.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic and forward‑thinking GP education team within the West Midlands GP School. Successful applicants will play a key role in strengthening the “GP Educational Academy”, working closely with the Primary Care Dean and Head of School.
Your contribution will directly enhance learner experience, improve the quality of GP training, and ultimately support safer, more effective patient care across the West Midlands.
If you are interested in applying, we encourage early applications.
