Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Health Services Researcher to join our growing team at Health Technology Wales (HTW) while we roll out our next exciting phase.
HTW is funded by Welsh Government and hosted by Velindre NHS Trust. The purpose of HTW is to identify, appraise, promote, enable and measure the adoption of health technologies across NHS Wales, linking into national agendas for innovation and prudent healthcare. HTW appraise the clinical and cost effectiveness of non-medicine health technologies in Wales, working with, but independently, of NHS Wales. HTW also act as a Front Door to NHS Wales, signposting technology developers to initiatives to support technology evaluation and optimization over the life cycle of the technology.
We are seeking to recruit a Senior Health Services Researcher (SHSR) to help lead a team of health services researchers and oversee delivery of a range of evidence review and health technology assessment outputs.
As well as having specialist knowledge of literature searching and critical appraisal, you will have extensive experience of leading evidence based projects and delivering work which will support national guidance on health interventions. You will also be able to demonstrate your ability to forge partnerships with UK and international partners in health technology assessments.
Advert
The post holder will focus on HTW’s work assessing the evidence-based use of non-medicine health technologies. They may also contribute to HTW’s wider work carrying out evidence reviews to support health and care policy and decision making in Wales, as part of the newly-formed Wales Evidence Centre.
Collaborating with subject experts and decision-making committees, the post holders will facilitate evidence-based decision making in Wales on a wide range of health and care topics. They will carry out evidence reviews of varying complexity, from rapidly summarising research findings to carrying out more rigorous evidence reviews.
The post holder will also provide professional management and leadership to new and existing members of the Health Services Researcher team They will line manage other team members, provide advice and support to other members of staff, and quality assure the evidence review work of other team members.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge
Essential criteria
- A post graduate master’s degree or PhD in a relevant subject such as public health, health services research or health care science, or equivalent research/clinical experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of systematic review methodologies for clinical effectiveness
- Knowledge of legislation relevant to the regulation of non-medicine technologies (e.g. medical device regulations) and health services research methodology (e.g. GDPR)
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
Desirable criteria
- A project management qualification or demonstrable experience.
- A broad understanding of NHS infrastructure
- An understanding of health economic methodologies
- Recognised management qualification (Diploma level or higher), or experience of leading and managing a team

- Specialist knowledge of one or more areas of research methodology such as the analysis and use of quantitative data, critical appraisal or qualitative research
- A good understanding of a wide range of other health services research skills, such as social research, qualitative research methods, questionnaire development, statistical analysis and epidemiology
- Experience of presenting and communicating scientific information clearly and appropriately to an expert and lay audience
- Experience of producing concise written reports for different audiences
- The ability to establish and develop good working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Demonstrable experience in working with multidisciplinary teams including senior managers, academics or clinicians
- Project management skills and the ability to deal with and prioritise a varied and demanding workload
- Experience of reporting and disseminating research findings e.g. in HTA reports, and in papers for publication in medical and scientific journals,

- Knowledge of NHS data collection, databases (e.g. literature databases) and analysis systems and how to use these to conduct research activity.
- Experience of working with Continuous Improvement Techniques for improving products, services or processes.

- Highly developed IT skills including the use of statistical packages, referencing systems, spreadsheets and word processing tools and systems to manage research data
