We are looking for Band 3 Theatre Support Workers to join our busy unit in Elective Orpington Theatres. Surgery running daily Monday-Saturday.
The primary role of this post is focused on the circulatory role of the theatre support worker in supporting the perioperative team. The role will also include the transportation of patients between wards or departments to theatres and recovery. It is a physically demanding role requiring considerable manual handling of patients and their beds / trolleys.
The theatre support worker will also be responsible for cleaning and re-stocking of theatres pre, intra and post operatively.
In addition, the theatre support workers will be responsible for ensuring all relevant equipment necessary for the surgical procedure is at hand. Assist with surgical positioning and assist the registered nurse with the various roles involved when circulating for different surgical procedures.
Please note: experience working in theatres is essential.

Patient Care:
- To chaperone patients in anaesthetic room as directed by a registered practitioner.
- Assist patients/relatives in their understanding of their journey in the department. When English is not their first language, refer to registered practitioner as required.
- Assist with all aspects of patient hygiene needs as directed by a registered practitioner.
- Assist registered practitioners in pressure area care, using relieving practices and devices as per local policy.
- Ensure that the patient’s property is handled in accordance with the Trust procedures.
- Assist with bed / trolley preparation, to ensure that the patient is clean and comfortable.
- Observe patients for signs of discomfort, offer empathy, support and reassurance, and escalate any concerns to a registered practitioner / medical team.
Clinical Practice:
Pre-operative Phase
- Prepare, perform checks on and set up theatre for the following: sets, instruments, equipment, consumables, table attachments, and irrigation fluids, medical gases prior to the start of each theatre list. This may include endoscopes, microscopes and lasers.
- Assist the Sterile Services team with set deliveries; performing all checks and putting away sets in correct places in sterile storerooms.
- To check and assist in the maintenance of stock levels in Theatres and other areas as delegated by the team leader.
- To assist with the transporting of patients and equipment between locations within the theatre department suite.
- To provide a knowledgeable and safe assistance with the transfer of the anaesthetised patient from the patient’s trolley to the operating table;
- To assist with the positioning of the patient for the surgical procedure under the supervision of a registered practitioner.
- Learn about the principles of scrubbing, gowning and gloving in accordance with Trust policy.
Intra-Operative Phase
- Perform the circulating role as required under the supervision or registered practitioners, including: connecting equipment, opening consumables, measuring and recording fluid input/output,
- Handling, recording and managing specimens in accordance with Trust policy and under the supervision of a registered practitioner.
- Supporting and observing the patient throughout the procedure.
- Acts as a link between the surgical team, theatre department and hospital.
- Perform swab, needle and instrument counts with a Registered Practitioner in accordance with the Trust policy.
- Complete all documentation (electronic / paper based) accurately in accordance with the Trust policy under the supervision of a Registered Practitioner.
Post-Operative Phase
- Maintain the cleanliness of theatres and equipment at all times.
- Assist in the disposal of any items, at the completion of the surgical procedure as per Trust policy.
- At the completion and during the list to assist in the cleaning and washing of theatre equipment and to transfer equipment to designated storage areas.
- At the completion and during the list to assist in the cleaning and washing of theatre and prepare for next case / close down of theatre.
Professional Responsibilities
- Refer all queries to a member of the registered team in an accurate and timely manner.
- Contribute to maintaining the health and safety of the department through reporting all hazards [faulty equipment / failed lights, fire hazards & spillage’s] to team leader / clinical co-ordinator immediately on discovery.
- Ensure familiarity with equipment and competency before use in accordance with local and manufacturer instructions.
- Act in accordance with Trust policy in ensuring that patient privacy and choice is maintained, having special regard to issues of confidentiality and data protection.
- Ensure documentation is recorded accurately, legibly signed and dated in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
- To maintain confidentiality at all times, in and out of the hospital environment
- Contribute to the maintenance of safety and security of the theatres.
- Maximise patient safety through helping to manage risk in Theatres, e.g. completing adverse incident forms and contribute towards the implementation of change in the department, as required.
- To arrive punctually at start of each shift ready to work and adhere to the uniform policy at all times.
- To ensure that Trust sickness reporting, annual leave and off duty request procedures are followed at all times.
- Contribute towards maintaining a cost effective service.
- To liaise with team leader when planning and prioritising workload and on taking breaks.
Education, Audit and Research
- Assist in maintaining best practice standards in the department.
- Assist in benchmarking, observations of care in theatre as directed by a registered practitioner.
- Participate in infection control initiatives and updates in relation to theatres.
Communication
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with all members of the department.
- Demonstrate awareness of the actions and feeling of others within the team at all times.
- Maintain a courteous and helpful manner at all times.
- Attend and participate in team communications, including team briefings, surgical safety checklist, team meetings.
- Welcome patients, relatives and visitors to the Theatre department. When answering the telephone [+/- pager] to use a polite and friendly response at all times. Take messages and convey to the appropriate member of the MDT.
- Communicate with and answer questions from patients /relatives within the sphere of their competence and knowledge; or refer to registered practitioner.
Personal and Professional Development
- To adhere to all Trust and national polices and guidelines at all times
- To be able to identify with support own development needs, completing a competency document and learning objectives within a specified time frame and as agreed by manager
- To ensure own attendance at mandatory study days and training (e.g BLS, manual handling, audit days etc) as required by department manager
- To update skills and knowledge as required by the Trust
- To actively participate in annual individual performance review
