The Nursing Associate role will bridge the gap between support worker and graduate Registered Nurse.
This is a 2-year apprenticeship programme leading to a Foundation Degree as a Nursing Associate. The University costs for the programme are fully funded. It is a training programme that combines both academic and work-based learning.
Successful candidates will be given a two and a half year fixed term, full-time training contract as a Trainee Nursing Associate Apprentice (TNA). There is a dedicated Nursing Associate team who will help support you through the programme as well as the support you will receive from the clinical areas you work in and the University.
During the programme the TNA will be employed at entry point Band 3, rising to Band 4 on successful completion of the on-programme qualification, apprenticeship programme, end point assessment and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Nursing Associate.
The programme will begin in January 2024. The TNA will be based, as an employee with King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, in a specific setting, opportunities are available to be based at Denmark Hill, Princess Royal University Hospital and the South sites. A TNA will also experience working in alternative settings in order that they gain a wide appreciation of many health and care contexts and are able to fulfil all the requirements of the programme.

To provide high quality, evidence-based nursing care to patients from admission to discharge under the guidance and supervision of a registered nurse (RN). Actively participate in a Nursing Associate Training Programme with learning activities in both the workplace and the Trust’s partner university.

This is a developmental role. The trainee will work towards progression into the post of Nursing Associate through successful completion of the Nursing Associate training programme which includes the attainment of a level 5 Foundation Degree qualification. They will develop and maintain knowledge, skills and competencies related to the role of Nursing Associate within the service and through completion of the Nursing Associate training programme which includes working in care settings and delivery of person-centred care.
The Nursing Associate training programme combines and integrates both academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between employers and education providers. A trainee Nursing Associate will be based, as an employee, in a particular organisation, in a specific setting, but will experience working in alternative settings in order that they gain a wide appreciation of many health and care contexts and are able to fulfil all the requirements of the programme.
The trainee will:
- Deliver high quality, compassionate care under the direction of a Registered Nurse (or other registered care professional dependent on setting) with a focus on promoting health and independence
- Have proficient attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS and Trust values
- Work as part of a designated clinical and care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the individual
- Carry out specific delegated clinical and care tasks and responsibilities to a high standard and competency, under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or other registered care professionals dependent on setting
- Work with a Practice supervisor and Practice Assessor to take responsibility for developing own clinical competence, leadership and reflective practice skills within the workplace, while on placements and through attending the Nursing Associate Training Programme
- Develop by the end of the Nursing Associate Training Programme the ability to work without direct supervision, at times delivering care independently in line with the individual’s defined plan of care, within the parameters of practice of the Nursing Associate role, accessing clinical and care advice when needed
What are the entry requirements to apply for the Nursing Associate Apprenticeship?
The minimum entry requirements are:
- Employed at Kings for 6 months as a HCA/CSW
- Care certificate
- GCSE/Level 2 literacy and numeracy qualifications or equivalent that meet the apprenticeship standards

Level 3 diploma in health and social care or equivalent healthcare qualifications at level 3 or above
- If you have a visa this will need 2yrs left to expiry at the start of the course.
If shortlisted you will be required to send your maths, English and level 3 or other qualification certificates for verification to the Nursing Associate team before the interview. If you do not send these and have them verified we will not be able to interview you.
Apprenticeship Eligibility
This Trainee Nursing Associate post is an apprenticeship. In order to be able to undertake this post, this below eligibility criteria must be met:

- Start their apprenticeship after the last Friday in June of the academic year in which they have their 16th birthday
- Be able to complete the apprenticeship within the time they have available; if you know an individual is unable to complete the apprenticeship in the time they have available, they must not be funded
- Not be undertaking another apprenticeship, or another Department of Education funded FE/HE programme, at the same time as any new apprenticeship they start. Individuals on a sandwich placement as part of a degree programme must not complete an apprenticeship during this placement.
- Have the right to work in England
- NB one of the following:
- A citizen of a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) (including other countries determined within the EEA or those with bilateral agreements), or have the right of abode in the UK, and have been ordinarily resident in the EEA (including other countries determined within the EEA or those with bilateral agreements), for at least the previous three years on the first day of the apprenticeship
- A non-EEA citizen with permission from the UK government to live in the UK (not for educational purposes), and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship
Interviews will be held 19th October at The Hudson School of Health, 350 Kennington Lane, Vauxhall, London, SE11 5HY. There will be a maths and English assessment and an interview.
