Applications are invited for a Clinical Director for our Radiology Care Group . Senior clinicians from all professional backgrounds are invited to apply.
This is an exciting time for exceptional people to take on leadership roles in our clinical structure at a time of rapid change and growth at King’s.
The Clinical Director leads the Care Group management team. Working closely with their General Manager and Head of Imaging, the post holder will ensure the effective operational management of the services delivered by the Care Group.
The Clinical Director will lead the care group management team to deliver outstanding services in line with agreed objectives, targets and quality standards.
Clinical Directors are required to devote five programmed activities (or equivalent time) to their management role. If you are unable to devote five we are willing to consider such an application and appoint a deputy. Please state in your application if this applies to you. Successful applicants are expected to adjust their job plan so that their management time falls within the standard working week (8.00-18.00, Monday to Friday). You would be required to attend all key executive and care group meetings.

The Clinical Director leads the care group management team, enabling the delivery of outstanding services in accordance with agreed objectives, targets, quality standards, controls and resource constraints as set out in the business plans for the services delivered by the Care Group. The Clinical Director has a key role to play in the development of the Care Group’s strategic vision.
Working as part of the Trust’s senior leadership team, the Clinical Director leads the management team for their Care Group which consists of a General Manager and a Head of Imaging and may also include nursing, allied health professional and healthcare scientist managers relevant to the Care Group’s portfolio of services.
As the accountable officer for the Care Group, the Clinical Director is responsible for:
- the delivery of high quality, safe care to patients across the range of services provided by the Care Group;
- working with the wider multi-disciplinary team and key stakeholders within the Care Group, the wider Trust and across King’s Health Partners and the South London Integrated Care System (ICS), to ensure care group strategies are set and plans are in place to achieve them
- line managing the General Manager, the Head of Imaging, Clinical Leads and other direct reports, ensuring that they feel well supported, engaged and clear about objectives and activity plans
- achieving financial sustainability and meeting operational targets, actively participating in the design and delivery of business plans
The Clinical Director is expected to inform the Site Executive Team of any risk to high quality patient care, staff satisfaction or to the delivery of financial or activity targets.
The way in which the Clinical Director carries out their role will always be guided by the Trust values.
The management time for this role will be clearly outlined in Clinical Directors’ job plans. The successful candidate will be expected to adjust their job plan, as far as possible, to undertake their leadership role so that it takes place within the standard working week (8.00-18.00, Monday to Friday). Where this is not possible, alternative patterns will be agreed in advance with the Site Chief Executive.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main Responsibilities
Strategy and Transformation
- To be an active member of the Site Senior Management Team, shaping the strategy and direction of the Trust, and contributing to national and local agendas, including that relating to King’s Health Partners.
- In conjunction with the Site Medical Director and Site Director of Operations, to define the strategic direction of the Service, gaining agreement with colleagues on areas and opportunity for service development and transformation. This will include formation of business and transformation plans with other members of the management team and the establishment of a framework for governance and performance management.
- To collaborate with all other Care Groups within the Trust to achieve excellence in patient care across the organisation.
- To represent the Trust’s interests with appropriate external organizations and at public opportunities (e.g. working groups/conferences/seminars).
Governance
- To be responsible for the delivery of clinical services including the development and identification of clinical priorities and protocols.
- Work closely with the Site Executive Team to embed a patient safety culture across all Care Group services, ensuring that effective clinical governance frameworks are in place. This includes putting strong processes for Duty of Candour, reporting incidents and concerns etc.
- To ensure the effective management of contracted clinical activity, bed usage, cancellations, discharge and achievement of national targets, e.g. infection control.
- To ensure that services are delivered within available resources to specified volumes and standards in line with contract requirements, the Care Group’s business plan and national service, activity and clinical outcomes, where applicable.
- To lead the processes for clinical audit and monitoring of national clinical standards against site performance, where relevant.
- To lead on ensuring the Care Group is compliant with requirements of the patient complaints process including review of all complaints and first review of responses for the Care Group.
- To support the Site Medical Director and Site Director of Operations in coordinating inspections (e.g. Royal Colleges, Health Education England) and responses to confidential enquiries (e.g. independent external reviews/serious case reviews, GMC investigations). To identify and implement any follow-up actions required.
Leadership, Staff Management and Operational Delivery
- The Clinical Director will lead the Care Group General Manager and Care Group Head of Imaging, collectively ensuring the effective operational management of the Care group. This senior leadership group is directly accountable for the performance of the care group.
- The Clinical Director will ensure that agreed outputs for the Care Group are delivered, as set out in the business plans of the services:
- Ensuring that the resources are effectively deployed to deliver agreed outputs.
- Holding clinical leads to account for delivery against objectives;
- Taking effective action where performance is at risk of falling below expected levels by supporting clinical leads, ensuring remedial plans are put in place.
- Ensuring services to meet all financial targets for capital and revenue budgets.
- In the relevant Care Groups, the Clinical Director will work with the Clinical Lead for Cancer for the Trust to ensure high quality delivery of investigation and treatment of patients on Cancer pathways in their Care Group including assisting in mandated data collection.
- In relevant Care Groups the Clinical Director will work with the Clinical Lead for Trauma to ensure high quality delivery of care of patients on trauma pathways including assisting in any mandated data collection.
- In the relevant Care Groups, the Clinical Director will work with the Clinical Directors and Clinical Leads to ensure site accountability and delivery of the emergency care standards
- To establish effective lines of communication to ensure that medical staff have the opportunity to influence the direction of plans and policies of the Care group through regular communication and participation in Site directed management processes
- Apply core people management processes to the required standard and ensure key workforce performance requirements are met, including but not restricted to: completion of good quality medical job plans and appraisals to set timescale; monitoring of activity against job plans; effective management of annual leave and absence; and mandatory training compliance.
- As part of the senior leadership group for the Care Group, the Clinical Director will be accountable for the Care Group financial spend which includes spending on locums (bank and agency) payments. The Clinical Director will be required to attend relevant medical pay oversight meetings to give assurances on controls.
- To engage with and lead on the implementation of any rostering systems that the Trust introduces to enable effective management of the medical workforce
- Undertake difficult conversations with medical colleagues and other senior members of the multidisciplinary team where standards of care or operational delivery fall below expected standards
- Lead performance management or disciplinary procedures for medical staff within the care group
- To support the Responsible Officer (or designated deputy) in the processes for medical revalidation
- In consultation with the Site Medical Director, to advise the Group Chief Medical Officer on the award of Clinical Excellence Awards to Medical and Dental staff.
- To be responsible for the implementation of national and Trust-wide policies on the hours of ‘doctors in training’, and on other changes to the terms and conditions of the medical workforce.
- Attend relevant site and other appropriate management meeting
Budget ownership and financial improvement
- To be accountable for the financial performance of the Care Group
- To be responsible for providing sound management of financial resources, seeking assurance and support from their Care Group General Manager and Site Director of Finance.
- To be responsible for financial improvement including reducing waste and non-value adding activities for patients.
Education and Research
- To be responsible for medical education including clinical teaching, undergraduate and postgraduate education, and to contribute to wider multi-disciplinary development initiatives.
- To co-ordinate research activity through the annual appraisal and job planning process; working with clinical colleagues to ensure appropriate use of research evidence in order to improve clinical practice and service delivery.
Appraisal
- The relevant Site Director of Operations and Site Medical Director will set objectives, conduct the annual appraisal and job plan review of the Clinical Director. Where appropriate, the appraisal will also take account of performance in the role of Medical Appraiser, to meet the requirements of revalidation
