The trainee SFA, working primarily in the intra-operative care of patients (although pre- and post-operative visits may also be part of the role), will utilise and develop their knowledge, skills and competence in surgical assistance under the guidance of a suitable clinical supervisor (consultant trauma & orthopaedic surgeon) and a mentor (experienced SFA) to ensure delivery of quality perioperative care to patients through evidence-based practice, effective leadership and collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will undertake the core SFA training through a university programme of study supported by Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) SFA Competency Toolkit for a period of 12 months. Also, the post holder will maintain a logbook of all operations assisted, as an important record of clinical skills acquisition and integral to the portfolio of evidence that the trainee SFA must accomplish as assessment of overall clinical competency. The post holder will commit to the Trust education agreement whilst training and will be paid at Annex 21 of a band 7 until competence and qualification are attained.
The post holder should have a clear understanding of professional, employment/contractual, legal and ethical obligations associated with the trainee SFA role. The Trust policy supporting the practice of non-medically qualified surgical assistants will apply to the trainee SFA role following appropriate risk assessment.
The flexibility to work as the situation and service require would be an essential aspect of this post.
