Job overview
The Chief of Staff plays a key role in the Trust working alongside the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to enable the delivery of Trust objectives including effective organisational leadership, clinical and operational strategy and finance. They will work with the CEO on the development of the strategic agenda, representing views to appropriate internal and external stakeholders, and attending meetings on behalf of the CEO and taking decisions based on the agreed strategy.

They will quality assure briefing material, ensuring that matters the CEO is responsible for are recorded and that action is commissioned, followed up on and delivered. They will attend meetings with the CEO, recording their own minutes and action points, ensuring these are met.
There will also be responsibility for managing the time of the CEO, planning the CEO’s diary appropriately and in a way that ensures visibility across the Trust, and across the wider health and care system in South-East London and the wider London region.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Accompany the Chief Executive to key meetings and undertake follow up actions/projects as appropriate, monitoring delivery by others, challenging and securing agreement to take on actions, briefing others and reporting back to the CEO. This will involve working with other Executives and their teams to manage outcomes from these meeting
- Attend meetings on behalf of the CEO as appropriate, making decisions on his behalf within the pre-agreed delegated authority parameters
- Take responsibility for tasks delegated by the CEO including working with the CEO’s Office colleagues to deliver the prioritised objectives of the Trust, alongside the CEO’s personal objectives.
- Use judgement to decide whether to commission briefings and then ensure it is delivered in time and to a sufficient quality and take remedial action diplomatically and assertively where necessary.
- Lead, coach and manage the performance of the team in line with good people management practices, ensuring excellence is recognised and underperformance is addressed.
- Participate in regular performance appraisal meetings and ensure each member of the team has a clear set of objectives and development plans.
- Ensure the team is compliant with all statutory and mandatory training together with any professional training requirements, ensuring individuals are up to date and fully compliant.
- Manage team absences including sickness in line with Trust policy ensuring the appropriate return to work meetings occur, e-roster is updated and productivity is at the highest possible level.

- Extensive experience working as a Chief of Staff or equivalent role that demonstrates wide senior influence.
- Experience of working in a large complex organisation at a senior level.
- Experience of working under pressure with tight deadlines and dealing with a large range of complex issues with conflicting priorities.
- Developed knowledge across a wide range of workforce procedures and practices. Understanding of employment law and workforce legal frameworks.
