The Clinical Director leads the care group management team, comprised of the General Manager and Head of Nursing enabling the delivery of outstanding services in accordance with agreed objectives, targets, quality standards, controls and resource constraints as set out in the business plans for the services delivered by the Care Group. The Clinical Director has a key role to play in the ongoing development and embedding of the Care Group’s strategic vision.
The Department provides ophthalmic services primarily at its units at Denmark Hill, Sidcup, Orpington and Farnborough.

Day care and inpatient surgery are both carried out at King’s. There is a dedicated, well equipped and purposely designed eye theatre in Day Surgery Unit, and over 99% of all ophthalmic procedures are carried out as day cases.
The Ophthalmology service is a busy dynamic department. As part of a large acute trust there is considerable interaction with other specialties both surgical and medical giving rise for the opportunity for research and the management of complex patients. The Denmark Hill site is a busy trauma centre. There is a coordinated teaching and training programme across South London and involvement in undergraduate medical student teaching for KCL

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Clinical Director is expected to inform the Site Executive Team of any risk to high quality patient care, staff satisfaction or to the delivery of financial or activity targets.
The way in which the Clinical Director carries out their role will always be guided by the Trust values
The Clinical Director will work to the Site Director of Operations, Site Medical Director and the Site Executive Management Team.
The management time for this role will be clearly outlined in job plans. Clinical Director candidates will be expected to make adjustments to their job plan, to undertake their leadership role so that it mainly takes place within the standard working week (8.00-18.00, Monday to Friday). Clinical Directors are required to attend the meetings of the PRUH executive and its subgroups. Meetings are currently held on Tuesdays and Thursdays but this may be changed from time to time as the need arises.

- A senior clinician from any professional background
- Experience of holding senior clinicians to account for standards of care
- Thorough knowledge of the structure, functions, culture and values of the National Health Service and its inter- relationship with other agencies
- Shows commitment to the leadership role of Clinical Director to promote a focus on patient experience and clinical outcomes for patients
- Extensive knowledge of clinical audit, Research and Development
- Understanding of the provision and delivery of health care services and of Government’s strategy and plans for modernising health care including understanding the implications for Medical staff
- Is prepared to be held to account for performance in this leadership role
- Advanced management/leadership experience of clinical teams
- Has the credibility to be a clinical leader by way of demonstrable clinical excellence and being able to command trust from colleagues
- Is able to work closely with key operational and nursing counterparts to provide effective leadership
- Is capable of leading a multidisciplinary team of clinicians (doctors, nurses and associated healthcare workers) within a complex healthcare system
