Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Medical Engineering Technician post is a key role within the Medical Equipment Management Service (MEMS), providing essential technical support to ensure the safe, effective, and compliant use of medical devices across the Trust, with a particular focus on the Endoscopy and Diagnostic Centre at PRUH. The post holder will be responsible for the full lifecycle management of medical equipment, including acceptance testing, commissioning, routine servicing, fault diagnosis, repair, calibration, and disposal. This role is critical in ensuring that medical devices are maintained to the highest safety and performance standards, directly supporting frontline clinical services and patient care.
The post holder will undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM) in line with agreed schedules, ensuring equipment reliability and minimising the risk of failure or disruption to clinical activity. They will be required to diagnose and resolve complex technical faults using specialised test equipment and manufacturer service manuals, ensuring that all repairs are completed efficiently and in accordance with relevant standards and guidelines. In addition, the role involves electrical safety testing and performance verification to ensure full compliance with regulatory and safety requirements.
A key aspect of the role is supporting clinical teams by attending clinical areas to carry out repairs and servicing, often within time-sensitive environments. The post holder will provide technical advice to clinical users on the safe and effective use of equipment, helping to reduce user-related faults and improve overall service efficiency. They will also liaise with equipment manufacturers and suppliers regarding technical issues, maintenance requirements, and procurement support.
The role includes maintaining accurate and timely records of all maintenance and repair activities using the Trust’s equipment management system, ensuring traceability, audit readiness, and compliance with statutory obligations. The post holder will contribute to incident investigations involving medical devices and support the continuous improvement of processes, procedures, and service delivery.
In addition, the post holder will play a role in equipment lifecycle management by supporting the evaluation and introduction of new medical devices, advising on replacement programmes, and ensuring appropriate installation and commissioning. They will also provide occasional training to clinical staff in the use of medical equipment, promoting safe practice and reducing operational risks.
The role requires effective communication skills, the ability to prioritise workload, and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. A strong understanding of relevant legislation, safety standards, and clinical environments is essential.
Overall, this post is critical to maintaining patient safety, supporting clinical service delivery, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. For full details of duties, responsibilities, and person specification, please refer to the attached Job Description.

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include. They shouldn’t however replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.
Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success because automatically generated answers:
- might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
- often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
- could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience
